Phoebe 158
I don't think it ruined her, but it certainly impacted her in so many ways. Back then in her peak the media and people in general had mean comments and were very critical of her, but somehow I feel that she just brushed it off. Those negative comments didn't seem so important since she was at the top of the game. I feel like her commercial and critical success worked like a shield during that time. Then ARTPOP happened and her career started to suffer more than ever. Not to mention she has been battling with depression and broke her hip before that. So she was already in sort of a bad place even before the era started. She started to crumble under all the pressure and fame and ARTPOP era/departing with Troy/media backlash only escalated that and made it worse. It's something she wanted, now she has it and it's something she'll have to live for the rest of her life. It's a huge burden if you ask me, but it's not like anyone forced her to become famous. I really think she's in a good place right now, physically and mentally. She experienced the high and lows of fame and knowing both sides, I'm sure she has learned how to handle it. Koreku 2,387
Fame made her realize that she doesn't want to live the rest of her life pandering to the GP by wearing bubble dresses and portraying herself as some fame goddess. I think she's going back to her roots-- prioritizing the music over the wigs and the shock value. She's remembering what she proclaims to be her mission in life: being an artist and making people happy with her music. The simple truth is that this woman was not born in a meat dress. Her name is Stefani Germanotta, and she grew up as a middle class brunette in NYC that loves to play piano. I think this is the most honest we've ever seen 'Lady Gaga', and her happiness is proof! You don't deserve a point of view if the only thing you see is you.

Love it. The Lady can do what she wants and as long as she is happy so am I.

Yes, let's act like all of that doesn't contradict everything she's said up until ARTPOP. Slay!
Ciccone Madonna 1,362
Thats not true. Being one of the eldest in the company here i can assure judging from the past a big comeback is always possible. It has to do with the image of the artist. After too much fame it comes a point of flop because you cant go higher. In 1989,1990 Madonna had hits becoming classics like Vogue and Like a Prayer. In 1992 people were saying her career is over due to overuse of sex in her art. Erotica was a moderate success but deemed as a flop with only one #3, a #7 song and multiple flop singles. Then Madonna realised she had to re-invent her self in another way. In early 1994 she released the song I ll remember and people were talking about her again. Then Take a Bow peaked at #1 for 7 weeks, something Vogue,Like a Virgin and Papa Dont Preach didnt manage to make. Her toned-down image helped the public welcome her once again as a different person/ Evita, Ray of Light shows a different face of her. What Gaga is trying to do now is to make people love her again from 0, thats what the covers jazz albums, tributes are all about. I think all these will create the ground for a new Gaga and it will be success.

Britney was iconic and was a world wide phenomenon, gaga was the same... everyone talked about her 24/7 during her peak. Everyone knew her. Everyone referenced her. I don't understand how people question how truly huge gaga was during her peak? There's literally only been 2 before her to achieve that peak (madonna, britney. Not Beyonce, not Christina, not fionna, not alana, not gwen, not even Whitney, Celine, or mariah)! ‘If religion be the cause of disunity, then irreligion is surely to be preferred.’ ‘Abdu’l-Bahá

I agree with you, but I'd also like to point out that Madonna is an extraordinary example and it doesn't always works out. I hope you are right though. Seems like Gaga is laying the foundation for people to get to know Stefani and show another side of her.

Sorry but ''wearing bubble dresses and portraying herself as some fame goddess'' made Lady Gaga. THAT IS ****ING LADY GAGA. I can't agree with this. She's contradicting everything she said before ARTPOP. -THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING.

She is contradicting herself, but that's because before she wasn't comfortable enough to admit it and flat out say it that Gaga is a character, a stronger version of Stefani. So yes, in essence she still is Lady Gaga, but she's also Stefani. That's how I see it from the way she has recently talked about Gaga/Stefani. I agree with @Koreku that this Gaga we have right now is the most honest she's ever been.
The Surrealist 27,470
Gaga is trying to achieve impact on politics and culture now. She doesn't want to do meanless music. I think of she would release a toned-down album, like Carole King's "Tapetry" or Stevie Nicks "Rock a Little", she would be on the critical and commercial spotlight again, because that's what nobody expects and going against expectations is what Gaga loves to do.
