Clinton jabs Sanders and Trump on immigration

Hillary Clinton fought on two fronts in California on Saturday as she sought to wrap up her battle with Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination, taking aim at him and at Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, with attacks on their immigration stances.

Both Clinton and Sanders campaigned across California, stopping in immigrant communities, big cities and the agricultural heartland on the final weekend before Tuesday's primary in the nation's biggest state.

Clinton used a stop at a Los Angeles-area college to criticize Trump for making "hateful, very prejudicial" statements about immigrants and Sanders for voting against a 2007 comprehensive immigration reform bill.

"I was in the Senate then, so was President Obama and so was Senator Sanders. President Obama and I voted for it, Senator Sanders voted against it. And that ended it," Clinton said.

"It was heartbreaking," she added.

Though Sanders, a U.S. senator of Vermont, faces nearly insurmountable odds to become the Democratic nominee, he has invested heavily in California, where a win could pressure the party to adopt some of the populist policies that have driven his campaign.

Predictable. Sanders didn't block that because he didn't care about immigration, he just feared for disproportionate consequences in the context of labor. Taking this from Politico:

For all his rhetoric in 2007, Sanders didn’t oppose a pathway to citizenship or efforts to boost border security. That chapter in Sanders’ immigration record reflects less on his support for the issue and more on his alliance to labor — and key unions also opposed the 2007 legislation.

“Sanders was basically one of our only allies … especially for low-skilled workers” in 2007, said Ana Avendano, a former top immigration official at the AFL-CIO. “He adamantly put his foot down and said these kinds of programs [allow] employers to bring in more and more vulnerable workers.”

[...]

"The problem for Sanders was a guest-worker program that some immigration advocates and Democratic lawmakers begrudgingly accepted as part of a comprehensive deal — but was abhorred by labor unions and their allies on Capitol Hill.

“What concerns me are provisions in the bill that would bring low-wage workers into this country in order to depress the already declining wages of American workers,” Sanders said in May 2007. “With poverty increasing and the middle-class shrinking, we must not force American workers into even more economic distress.”

Not automatically more correct than being in favor of the bill, but Hillary using that as if Bernie hasn't pulled his weight is just idiotic. What about Sanders voting for the Dream Act three years later? The Gang of Eight bill in 2013? Calling out Obama in 2015? I hope people look into it instead of just believing what she's implying.

I find his statements about it correct and valuable, and in no way can you draw a direct line between his political moves and his supposed lack of good intentions in the context of immigration.

How is this a defense?

Sanders frequently blocks bills that aren't part of his agenda. Here's a nice article about how Sanders fails to compromise. It mentions how he tries to block Amber Alert.

He also endorses bills when he has no support for their base because they also serve his agenda such as the HIV/AIDS bill which is endorsed only by ONE group out of hundreds

-----

His intentions are to only serve his agenda and his alone.

This is only further proven by his recent antics.

I'm not arguing this.

smh

You really need to re-evaluate why you make these threads at all, it seems.

Your post could work for every politician so that's a weak response for sure.

Your argument was the invalid one.

Clinton said he voted against that bill. You chose to vindicate Sanders' choice for doing so.

Did Clinton ever claim he did it out of spite or anything? It's clear he had his reasons.

She just mentioned it because it's true. The context doesn't even support him because Sanders put more emphasis on labor itself than the immigration rights. Because there is a slight potential of his agenda not being served, he counters the bill. Under the context of immigration, she has every right to point that out.

Yet you try to spin it as Clinton stating he has a negative opinion of them. It's called emphasis. Where his battles lie. Sanders has no emphasized his stance on immigration clear either.

What I don't want to argue is you claiming that Sanders does not have a recorded history of going after his own agenda. The mere fact that he hypocritically joined the Democratic party after trashing them for decades goes to show that he has a distorted viewpoint of accepting things only when they may serve his interests. Just look at his approval of superdelegates.

I am not going to argue that about Sanders because it is definitive of him, much like it's definitive for Hillary to lack transparency. These are non-****ing-negotiable.

I make these threads because I want to. Feel free to not visit them.

No I didn't.. I literally said it wasn't necessarily a good decision, but it's not an example of Bernie opposing proper immigration reform either.

That's obviously what Hillary was going for.

Then why did he vote in favor of the Dream Act and the Gang of Eight bills?

Who ever stated Sanders was against immigration reform?

It is simply valid to state that he puts more emphasis on other issues over immigration. This doesn't mean he doesn't support immigration reform. That's what she's trying to say.

Because they served his interests at the time of voting.

Which would be normal. That's what politicians do. Except he emphasizes his agenda at the expense of others' repeatedly throughout his history.

Look it up.

Nah, that's clearly your interpretation.

I'm not saying she's wrong by saying what she did though, it's predictable and smart for her to bring it up. But the implications of it are incorrect imo, which is what I posted about.

The interpretation that anyone with a rational mind and good understanding of the issues would make. Sanders clearly does not oppose immigration reform. He just doesn't value it as highly as Clinton. That's the point she's making.
