Oh, wow. This news hit me like a ton of bricks. My disdain for Taylor around here is well-known but damn...even I feel somewhat sorry for her in this case. She was head over heels in love with him and this being her longest relationship, she probably thought he was The One and it was only a matter of time before a proposal happened. For him to dump her just after she had been by his side after the accident was rather cold, too. They'd been together so long now that I didn't expect such a sudden comedown.

But so saying...

I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. When they got together, I had a feeling this was going to be her first relationship to last longer than 3 months. Not much longer, but a bit longer. Turns out I was right and then some. i never expected them to make it to a year, never mind 15 months. With reports that marriage was on the cards, I wondered if this may indeed be Taylor's first proposal, even if she didn't make it down the aisle. But then things got a bit weird. The time scale on this break up show that the photos of him coming out that massage parlour must have caused a rift that never went away. And they were both constantly on individual tours, they likely didn't have much time together. Then he didn't attend the Grammys with her because he was working on his album that night (that was the weirdest reason for missing an awards show in history, especially considering Ellie Goulding had been working with him that day and managed to attend). And then when gossip magazines reported a few weeks ago that Taylor had supposedly presented Calvin with a potential prenup before he'd even proposed, I wondered just how much longer they'd have to go since Calvin is such a hot-head and doesn't like being messed around. Looks like I called it right. Maybe that loved-up Caribbean holiday was a make-or-break moment. I've always thought this partnership was weird from the start. He's a humble lad from Dumfries who was largely a UK-specific sensation until recently and she's a massive American superstar with eye-watering wealth and status, awards, power and likely will go down as a music legend. Such a pairing just isn't going to last, their worlds are too different. Yes, Calvin's rich too but in the UK, we're so much more grounded in life. Taylor lives such a fairytale existence that could only exist in America and that life is so alien to people who come from Calvin's background. In Britain, we laugh at rich Americans who live on all-organic produce and don't eat carbs after 5pm, who spend $2000 on MANiCUREs and have psychiatrists for their pet dogs. That's what Taylor's life was in comparison to his. I mean, when people from round these parts start making it in the US, they tell their families  to warn them if they start getting too Americanised and losing touch with reality. I'm sure dating Taylor was a massive culture shock for Calvin. I'm also surprised that he chose her to begin with. She's so different to every other girl he's dated. He tends to go for trashy looking girls and doesn't date for long. He strikes me as someone who isn't interested in settling down, or if he is, loyalty would be as far as it went, he wouldn't want marriage and children. Surely he was aware that Taylor's always wanted that stuff?

I really hope Taylor learns from this. Don't date guys who have had a bunch of short-term relationships. Don't go overboard with soppy Instagram posts every week. Don't smother him and be needy. Don't start dropping marriage hints after a mere year of dating. What she also needs to do is stop dating celebrities. A civilian guy will be far more likely to stay with her unlike a celebrity guy, who's too easily swayed and entitled. I can only imagine how much she's going to tear into him with her next album. She was harsh enough on her previous exes who she only dated for a paltry 3 months. She was with this guy for over a year, her longest ever, a relationship she seriously believed was going to lead to marriage. She'll verbally destroy him. I can only imagine how this will increase views and sales of Blank Space while she's working on her revenge. But I don't know if the world will buy it this time. She's become so laughable by this point. The fact she's always the dumpee, never the dumper is doing nothing for her image. Someone who's had as many relationships as she has should have an even mixture of dumper, dumpee and mutual. But she is always the one getting dumped. Even Kim Kardashian can keep a man longer than her. If that doesn't make her do some soul searching, I don't know what will.
