"It’s not a negative connotation. It’s not “you’re so gay,” like “Your so lame,” but the fact of the matter is that this boy should’ve been gay. I totally understand how it could be misconstrued or whatever. The video we did a while ago on a budget of little to nothing, it paints that same picture. Everyone played with that Ken Doll and they were changing his outfits." — Katy Perry

Not a fan of the song or use of the word 'gay' in this context but she was young and silly.

I have mixed feelings about songs like these. I don't like the song, but I wouldn't say it's homophobic. Kind of like "**** Tha Police" saying "I don't know if they fa-gs or what, search a ni-ga down and grabbin his nuts" It's not really homophobic, but it doesn't bode well.

lemme make up for my katy-bashing thread. :poot:

Spoiler

which it wasn't, btw. thanks for closing it. :madge:

i actually like the song; although i have to admit, it has more to do with the melody as opposed to the, well... interesting lyrics. i think in this context the word 'gay' translates as 'hipster' or 'metrosexual' or whatever. i agree, her way of using the word is completely wrong and can be perceived as offensive.

she just has a weird sense of humor, as some would put it. :poot:

Spoiler

Not to mention she was still uber-religious :flop:

It probably wasn't super fringe in her mind

This is no different than the threads where people call Justin Bieber a "bottom" and worse a "lesbian" a million tired times...

Agreed, I doubt she thought much of it, she obviously understood what she meant herself but even acknowledged that it wasnt the clearest message.

Shame that most members will come in to bash her now and forget all the good she has done since.

It's blatantly homophobic.  I guess Katy never saw true-gay-icon Hilary Duff's world renowned PSA

It perpetuates a stereotype of what "gay" is supposed to be.

I hate this song though so I could care less.

I always used to cringe.

There is literally no excuse for such insensitive lyrics, she was fckin 23 yo woman, not a teenager.

It shows how stupid she is, and how she is willing to do practically anything to try and get a hit. I was just finding out about my sexuality at that point and to come across songs like that was another insult. And for her to laugh it off is even more insulting. I would be more forgiving if she admitted to being homophobic at that point, but to be like "omg it was just a joke" is worse in my mind.
