(CNN)New Orleans Pelicans player Bryce Dejean-Jones was fatally shot in Dallas early Saturday after he forcefully entered an apartment, Dallas police said.

A Dallas resident told police he heard someone enter his apartment by kicking open the front door, police spokesman DeMarquis Black said in a statement. The resident said "he called out to the individual, but was not answered," and when the resident's bedroom door was kicked open, the resident fired his gun, police said

Dejean-Jones' agent, Scott Nichols, said the player was in Dallas to visit his girlfriend for his daughter's first birthday and had never been to her new apartment. He went to the wrong apartment -- on the third floor, just below his girlfriend's apartment -- and tried to enter, Nichols said.

Police had no immediate response to Nichols' comments.

Dejean-Jones was struck and collapsed in the breezeway. He was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, Black said. It's not known if any charges have been filed.

Dejean-Jones, 23, was a rookie guard with the Pelicans this past season, having played in college for Iowa State, the University of Nevada at Las Vegas and the University of Southern California.

So he broke into an apartment? He didn't deserve to die, but it is Texas. Break in, you have a high chance of getting shot.

Rest in peace, I feel sorry for his family :(

I don't understand his alleged actions though. If someone doesn't answer the door, whether it be girlfriend or not, I wouldn't kick the door down since it's not my place. I also then wouldn't kick down a bedroom door when someone shouts out to me who isn't my girlfriend.

Something doesn't add up.

This is so sad.

Spoiler

It seems strange that he didn't call his girlfriend to find out where she was? It seems a little extreme to break into a home, even your own. I'll assume that he must have been worried that something happened to her and was desperate to make sure she was okay. Still, a horrible though.

I just.. don't understand. :saladga:

Why would he need to BREAK IN when he could have knocked and/or made some phone calls? Once inside someone calls out from their bedroom.. he doesn't answer and instead tries to break in? What?

I think this is more likely it. Still... a simple phone call/ text message would have been VERY helpful.
