Indonesia Approves Death for Child Rape

Indonesia has toughened its punishments for child rapists to include the death penalty and chemical castration.

It follows outrage over several recent rape incidents including the gang-rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl.

President Joko Widodo said the regulation was "intended to overcome the crisis caused by sexual violence against children".

Previously, the maximum sentence for rape, of either an adult or a child, was 14 years in jail.

People jailed for sexual offences against children may also now be made to wear electronic monitoring devices after their release.

Honestly, I think I am for it. Give these bastards a reason not to touch children. It's sick, and the cycle needs to stop.

I don't think I agree with this.

Like seriously death for child rape? Give him 20 years of imprisonment or something, I think death sentences should only be given to murderers, who in fact took people's lives.

They've basically taken away the children's lives. I mean a lot of the kids may never recover from what was done to them

It's certainly a traumatizing experience for the victims, but sometimes rapists commit crimes under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they couldn't control what they were doing. It's not like I support criminals but from a humane perspective, criminals are humans too and they deserve punishment, but not beyond what they deserve - death.

As someone who's been through this kind of stuff, both as a teen and a kid, I kind of agree with you.

Death is just...such an extreme honestly. It's cheaper for the government and sends a harsher message to promise a lengthy prison sentence, possibly life in prison depending on the situation. Killing a criminal does nothing really...

Maybe in addition they could add flagellation (sorry is that the right word?) in addition to life imprisonment, which some may think is insufficient.

My father supports the notion of whipping the criminals in public, so that it serves as a warning to others who may hold the thought of committing the same crime. Harsh but it has its influence I guess. I have yet to form an opinion on that though.

Pedeophiles deserve a very, VERY strong punishment, but idk if death is the best route to take... Multiple people on death row were found to be innocent later on, so idk how comfortable I am with killing someone who may be innocent after all
