Overrated.

The surprise element weighs heavy here, but that doesn't make it better than so many of her other performances. Vocally she's been stronger many times. Never got what all the fuss was about in this fanbase. It's simply one of great performances that year for me, but not even the best of 2015.

This is undoubtedly one of her 3 best performances ever.

It's not just about the voice, it's about the overall effort.

It wasn't just another good performance of some old songs with a typical rendition. She found a magic balance between the antinomy of the classic formula and she added a refreshing vibe of the present. She managed to balance perfectly the classic  with her weird self without choosing the safe and boring route for a textbook tribute. That night she was SO effortlessly cool and this is mainly what made the whole world to applaud her.

How didn't she choose that route though? She did nothing but look pretty and sing the notes in a refined accent, putting on a theatrical operatic edge on her voice in all the high notes but one (the last).

And that "weird self", whut. There was none of that anywhere.

Her weird self was all over the place. Don't look for crazy outfits and fussy wigs, she's Lady Gaga even when she looks normal. Her presence alone carries all the bizzare things she's done over the past years so a four-minute performance and a gown aren't enough to make her weirdness disappear especially for the casual viewers who had already a specific opinion on her image til then.

As for the route, I cannot name some specific moments and reasons for that, it was just the feeling that i got as an outcome of her performance. It was classic yet refreshing and not outdated whatsoever.

Well, I never said it was outdated. Just nothing that special. I agree that her presence makes a definite impact on the reception of the performance, but that only fortifies my original point: it's overrated because the fact that it's the weirdo meat dress wearer with a d-ck pulling off a classical performance like this determines how high people will rate it, not the actual quality of the performance per se. If it was about quality, there are plenty of other performances that year alone which should be praised just as heavily and probably more, but they're not.

Κeep in mind that an iconic performance is not just about a perfect execution. It's also about the place and the moment. She was coming off an extremely messy and underperforming era that made her look pretentious about her constant "art" obsession. That performance was the best proof that Gaga is not about sales, charts, Katy perry and complex art. She is also a genuine, talented and cool artist. Oscars is a huge global event so it pretty easy for an artist to gather much attention thus a great performance has a tremendous potential to be iconic.

For all the above reasons this performance is destined to remain one of Gaga's best.

Well, fine, I get that perfectly. I just think that reputation has the tendency to keep performances that were better (imo, i.e. showing her talent and versatility) around that period from view (among her own fans). Like I said: the surprise element weights heavy, but that doesn't make it her best performance.

Anyway, I feel like we agree on why it's appreciated as it is, but I just don't like that way of thinking, that is all. So two kinds of logic then, nothing wrong with that.

Boohoo.

If anything, I'm complimenting her: she has better performances out there that year. Nothing hateful about that. You on the other hand.

PMKKARDASHiAN

It was a good performance, and the praise was well received, but nothing, and I mean NOTHING in her 8 year career has yet to touch the 2009 vmas.

I watched it today and was taken back by the look on her face when she's layin on the stage, she looked so hungry, so alive. She wanted it so badly.

This performance, like another member stated, was just her looking pretty hitting notes we all knew she could hit. While a good performance, it's nothing special

"The hills are alive, with the sound of music", but just not LG5 :saladga:

This performance was absolutely beautiful though, glad she did it. :applause:

Yes, I also do love partying in moving houses as seen in that one Bacardi tv ad.
