Sure but how come people here are discussing the fact that Japan was worse than the US and so the US did "ok". None of the sides are ok, we shouldn't try to justify any of them. But keep in mind history yes. When you see who people want to vote for at the moment I think remembering war (and its various crimes) is important!

This is not my point, how is your post related to what I said? If you read this thread I never said one side or the other should apologize. So in that sense I don't disagree with what Abe said. We don't choose to be born, we didn't commit those acts, but it's up to us to reproduce them or not. I just think that people have a short memory when you see the current state in many countries regarding the rise of extreme right wing political parties. How this related to Abe's grandfather war crimes?

More than 80% of the casualties were civilians, how can you even speak of retaliation? Two atomic bombs as a retaliation for "crimes against humanity"? Do you even hear yourself?

Because the bombs saved lives. The US could have nuked two major cities, but they didn't. At least it was an act of war, meanwhile the Japanese and Germans were systematically murdering civilians.

I agree with you but you know , 'Short memory' and 'double standards' are what human nature is.. Shinzo Abe has a 'short memory' and clings to his 'double standards' so why can't everyone else

Japan itself killed million of innocent Chinese civilians, as well as being an accomplice to one of the world's largest genocides.

They should be thankful the US didn't nuke Tokyo, because that would have bee a more appropriate retaliation to Japan's crimes against humanity.

The bombs saved lives. Cry about it. It's called war.

The reason they didn't nuke Tokyo is cause they've already destroyed it and killed 250 000 civilians. Seriously, learn your history.:toofunny:

That's absolutely false. By that logic, London was also destroyed, which is a bit ironic since they bombed it every night till the war ended.

If you seriously think the nukes have to be apologized for, you need to learn your history and stop being so soft.

Well he would shoot himself in the foot, he is actually saying that he shouldn't be held accountable for his grandfather's doing (which is quite true). Now if he is blindly following some ideology that could lead to a new war, that's problematic. I don't enough about him to know if he has double standard. If he is a bad example, why should we follow him? You also have great example like the Clarsfeld couple, a French Jew and a German woman that had her father in the SS. They have hunted down nazis for decades so they could be tried for their crime. This is no apology but it is a good way of "moving on". I would rather follow their example, but you are right it is up to you to decide what you want to do.

No it's not false. And yes London also suffered a great number of civilian casualties(around 20 000) during the bombings there and the British responded accordingly with air raids in Germany. The Royal air force was the the best one in the time of WWII and they won "the Battle of Britain". But this is not what we are talking about here, right? The Japanese were unable to protect themselves from the US air raids and they were already loosing the war cause their cities were being bombed left and right. I'm not making this up, like I'm literally sitting here with a book and you can google everything I say. The US war with Japan didn't start nor ended with the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They were bombing Tokyo and other cities even after the Japanese started the negotiations to surrender.

You are the one that needs to learn history. And also I already said that I don't think Obama should apologize about the nuclear bombings, cause it's pointless.

So apparently the U.S. actually warned Japanese citizens days in advance with flyers and radio broadcasts detailing where they were striking and why :ohno: Five days before Hiroshima was hit and within the three days before Nagasaki was hit. They also mapped out 33 other targets :ohno:

http://www.damninteresting.com/ww2-america-warned-hiroshima-and-nagasaki-citizens/

Not that it justifies the use of a mega-destructive bomb but...yeah...just thought it was interesting.

Spoiler

Obviously there's doubt over how accurate that is.

Anyway, I don't see why Obama is expected to apologize for the actions of our military 70 years ago  everyone involved in that war had a massive amount of blood on their hands and apologies have been given out for decades on all sides. Just let it lie in the past, learn from it, and let's move on.

How can Obama apologize? Most Americans think dropping the bombs was the right action, so who's he apologizing for?

I don't find any use in the apologies but saying "it's the past" is of very poor taste when you know the consequences are still there in Japan.
