The reason I said you were ignorant was because you think the nukes are "100x worse" than what the Japanese did. Which means that either you have a very odd moral compass, or don't actually know what the Japanese did. The Japanese war crimes were truly horrendous.

Of course war crimes don't justify war crimes. But killing 250,000 people to save a million or more does, or at the very least it has a much larger moral backing. The debate only exists by idealist who can't accept the facts of war or conspiracy theorist who believe we dropped the bombs to show up Russia and that Japan was totes mcgotes gonna surrender, which is a baseless claim. Russia already knew about the bombs after all.

The reason I think American patriots like you cannot be objective on this issue is because of your preaching on morality while defending the nuking of innocent civilians on other side of the world. If this would be any other nation, their leaders would be tried for war crimes.

My "100x worse comment" was an answer to someone who said

"You hit me, I hit you back. My hit was obviously harder and you got hurt."

which is obvious reference to pearl harbour and justification for war crimes.

Don't pretend that Americans cared about other civilians from Asia and wanted to protect them from Japanese so they bombed them out of mercy.

Japan's war crimes at the time, as well as their #1 partner in crime Nazi Germany, warranted the bombs. It was the only way to stop the war in the pacific, and nearly every historian believes it saved lives. You can either continue to be a hype-emotional observer of history and say they were absolutely unnecessary, or you can look at thing objectively and see that the bombs saved lives.

At the end of the day, Japan and Germany killed more innocent civilians in far more torturous ways. The bombs showed the world that the US and allies wouldn't tolerate crimes against humanity with two swift blows and that was it. No torture camps, no animosity. It was an act of humanity.

You are literally a google search away to see all the ignorance in your comment.:toofunny: Americans and allies have already been bombing Japan before the atomic bombs and killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. It's not "two swift blows" and done. There's a reason why the American government banned the pictures and censored all the information about the nuclear attacks. Also y'all incarcerated in concentration camps(IN the US) a 100 000 Japanese Americans some of who have been in the US for more that two generations. There was a horrible propaganda against the Japanese portraying them as monkeys and non-humans which led to very large percentage of Americans supporting the idea that the US should just wipe out the entire country of Japan with nuclear weapons. Like learn your history.:emma:

And again I'm not saying that Japan didn't commit horrible things or that it was on the right side of the events. But thinking that the US was some sort of an angel that saved the world is just wrong and naive...

If a country apologize doesn't it make them accountable for reparations? And that's why they are usually avoided, similarly to Turkey that will never recognize the Armenian genocide.

I was wondering about this too. Legally, I've heard that apologizing admits fault.

Always two sides to every story

and tbh when it comes to war, there isnt always a "right side"

Maybe one side was more evil than the other. But more often than not, both sides are responsible for doing things they shouldnt have that cause the escalation

im not saying every war there ever existed there wasnt on accasion some Nations that were totally innocent. But more often than not, that wasnt the case

I know that if you recognize a genocide or something it's the case, (see case Turkey and Armenia). Apologies are different. Honestly I think that when you drop two atomic it's unforgivable and not just for Japan but also for the environment you destroy. But I guess I am a minority here :)

That's exactly my point! I'm not trying to excuse Japan. But there's a reason why nuclear weapons were never used after WWII. And yeah wars are always disgusting on both sides regardless of who initiates them.

This. Like these two cities are still suffering from the bombs 70 years later and to call them "an act of humanity" is just wrong - to say the least. Maybe it was a good strategic move and maybe it wasn't idk, that's still being debated by historians much smarter than me, but what's not debatable is that there's nothing humane about it. It's the most inhumane thing that the human have come up with in the history of war.

LebaneseDude

Can people not criticize or praise the morality of the Hiroshima attacks through retrospect?

Things were different back then. Don't paint the world with the same brush as you would today.

Things that are appalling by today's standards were the plat du jour less than 100 years ago.

I'm not justifying anything. Just stop ignoring context. It's insulting to all involved whether it be the aggressors or the victims.

Nobody should apologize for anything. These things should not be forgotten but they should be forgiven without making fools of people. We move forward, not backward.

I'm conflicted on this.

I think he does need to apologise but considering Japan still has memorials of people who committed genocide :emma:

Japan itself killed million of innocent Chinese civilians, as well as being an accomplice to one of the world's largest genocides.

They should be thankful the US didn't nuke Tokyo, because that would have bee a more appropriate retaliation to Japan's crimes against humanity.

The bombs saved lives. Cry about it. It's called war.

People saying nuking a city is okay because of pearl harbour is silly because Japan attacked a naval base whereas America destroyed a city of innocent people. But Japan attacked unprovoked so it's messy :(. Such a waste of lives in both world wars.

More than 80% of the casualties were civilians, how can you even speak of retaliation? Two atomic bombs as a retaliation for "crimes against humanity"? Do you even hear yourself?

1940's America is just as foriegn to me as 1940's Germany and Japan are to Germans and Japanese today. I don't care about nor do I feel it necessary to defend their actions. But if you don't have anything else to say

It comes down to whether or not you are willing to let 2, 4, 8 or more times as many people die by bullets rather than a bomb. I don't view that as humane or moral, but to each his own I guess.

The idea that kiling a million men is fine as long as you save women and children is also questionable to me. That's completely ignoring the fact that the japanese were prepared to send their women and children to war. Invading mainland Japan would have had many civilian casualties.
