As a consequence, cultural, traditional or religious values cannot be invoked to justify any form of discrimination, including discrimination against LGBTI persons. These laws should be reconsidered as soon as possible. The European Union reaffirms its commitment to the equality and dignity of all human beings irrespective of their sexual orientation and gender identity. I think it's a dual hit on both the fact that Putin and Trump are very close, as well as the fact that Trump and Putin are part of very anti-gay establishments, the GOP and the Russian government respectively. I wouldn't call him a supporter but he's definitely not one of the main enemies of the LGBT rights movement the most homophobic thing I've heard him say lately is suggesting that he'd appoint someone to the SCOTUS that would consider reversing the judgement and allow the states to decide on same-sex marriage rights...which isn't good in any way but whatever, you know? The recent laws here don't surprise me one bit. It's like a cornered snake spitting all the venom it can right before it dies. I mean I agree that Trump isn't the biggest enemy of the LGBTQ+ community, but I find it a little troubling that you're phrasing your state to make at as if being a Democrat immediately exempts you from queephobia, because there is a goddamn number of people are very queerphobic and are "liberal". I understand you can support equal rights while also feeling that state sovereignty should come above all but I don't consider this something we should leave up to the states (even though the momentum was already there, all 50 would've gotten it in the next few years anyway). Especially because the right for same sex couples to get married is protected by the 14th amendment. Allowing the states to deny that right is unconstitutional. It's not like I am his biggest fan, but he has little to nothing to do with anti-LGBT laws. He even spoke against the bathroom bill when so many people didn't, it's unfair to target him for this. -- This is a little hypocritical to me, as so many European countries still need to get their game together when it comes to LGBT rights, but I'm still glad that the world isn't letting discrimination rooted in law pass. It's only unconstitutional now because of the opinions of 5 judges. They could have easily went the other way with their decision. At the end of the day it comes down to strict v. liberal interpretation. Most likely when Angela Merkel gets replaced (assuming that the far right party doesn't win, of course). A huge majority of politicians are in favor of it and asked the CDU/CSU aka Merkel's party many times to finally make it legal, but nope.
