Kepler Telescope Finds 1284 Planets

NASA's Kepler mission has verified 1,284 new planets – the single largest finding of planets to date.

The announcement Tuesday by NASA scientists doubles the number of planets confirmed by Kepler

“This gives us hope that somewhere out there, around a star much like ours, we can eventually discover another Earth," said Ellen Stofan, chief scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

That's.... really cool and very interesting. Who would have thought that there are a ton of planets in the universe. Wow, amazing. My mind is blown.

Think of it this way: 

There are approximately 10-100 billion stars in our galaxy. Our star has 8 planets and 5 dwarf planets, making the total 13.

if every star in our galaxy had at least 1 planet (which most probably have more than one) that would make at least 10,000,000,000 - 100,000,000,000 planets in our OWN Galaxy.

Then it gets more crazy... There are approximately 10 billion to 100 billion galaxies in our observable universe, most of which being larger than ours, which can hold hundreds of billions of stars. 

So, if we times the amount of galaxies by the amount of stars in each Galaxy.... Well, that gives us an inconceivable about of planets. And even if 0.0001 percent of them had life... That would still give us a billion planets with life.

This is all true. However, the real problem is being able to travel to these planets.

That makes them finding 1284 planets sound even more uneventful

I honestly think we will find proof of life elsewhere in our lifetime. However, I don't think we will come in contact with that life in this lifetime  

but I mean, it could spark an interest in all governments, and they might work together to find a way to get to this life, which could speed up the process exponentially!

I recently posted another thread here talking about how Stephen Hawking and some billionaire will try to send a cellphone sized camera to the galaxy Androma for the first time. This technology will take about 20 years to develop and another 20 years to for the camera to reach the Andromeda galaxy. So if it all goes right, we will have seen real pictures of Andromeda in about 40 years.

It was actually Proxima Centauri, wasn't it? The nearest star to us, that isn't the sun of course.

We both got it wrong. The project is aimed for Alpha Centuari. I probably got them mixed up because of the letter A.
