Many studies are like contracts with the small letters people don't read. The study is implying that a spore that CAN be found in obese individuals CAN pass to not-obese individuals. This is not a big study and cannot be generalized, and certainly not conclude that obesity is an infectious disease. It's just a very small theory that the media is using as click bait.

Obesity can result from genetic factors, which is why you see familial trends.

Regarding partners, it's typically because most people find comfort in someone they can relate to. 

Not disproving this article or anything, but there's more context than you're implying.
