Hillary Apologizes to Coal Miner Over "Out Of Business" Comment

Hillary Clinton, in a rare candid moment on the trail, apologized to a man who confronted her over comments made earlier this year about putting coal miners "out of business."

Bo Copley, a West Virginian who recently lost his job at a coal company, teared up as he told the former secretary of state that he didn't know how to explain his situation or her comments to his young children. Seated beside his wife, Copley slid over a photo of his kids to Clinton, who was sitting a just few feet from him at the community round-table discussion.

He questioned how she could say what she said at a CNN forum in March —"We're going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business" — and then "come in here and tell us how you're going to be our friend."

He also told her he was representative of the angry crowd who had assembled outside hours before.

Outside the event, protesters could be heard yelling "Go home, Hillary!" Several were carrying Trump signs and alternated between chants of "Benghazi! Benghazi!" and "We want Trump!"

Clinton meanwhile made indirect reference to the protests by saying: "I will do whatever I can regardless of whether people are yelling at me and whether people are misrepresenting me or whether people are not looking at everything I say and taking something out of context. That's part of it, I understand that. But I'm gonna get up every single day trying to figure out what to do to help you provide the kind of future for your children that they deserve to have.

It's easy for people, including politicans, to make statements about "breaking big banks" and putting "fossil fuel companies out of business". They forget that there are millions of people out there that will lose their jobs. A lot of these people, such as these coal miners, don't have other skills to fall back on.

I'm glad Hillary has always adopted for the calm and measured approach. Coal mining is the enemy, but coal miners aren't. Nothing is simple and we need to approach these problems with the respect they deserve.

She's not apologizing for her stance. She's apologizing for making the statement out of context that she'll put the coal industry out of business. It has the unfortunate implication that she's out to get the coal miners. She never meant it that way.

It's not a "wrong" statement though. We should be against coal mining. Bernie is even stricter on it, but at least she's not forgetting that there are humans as parts of these establishments.

Give her credit where it's due for once.

Like, that is such a non-apology. She's just covering her tracks and doing damage control as usual. If she had said something like "You're right, I didn't think it through at the time and I apologize. I'll do my best to find a good balance, possibly finding ways to go green and employ those that lose their jobs to help with the restructuring of our energy grid to help our climate without causing the unemployment of those who work in the fossil fuel industry." then that'd be something else, but no. "I was misrepresented, they twisted my exact words, I didn't mean what I said" lady, get out of here. This is a running theme with her. When she's caught and exposed in some b.s., she claims that others are lying about her even if they can provide video proof behind what they're saying. Then she'll tell another bold faced lie to cover it up. I don't trust her at all.

I hate that I'm voting for her but she's the best of a bad situation at this point. At least I can agree with some of the things she claims to stand for.

She didn't run and hide though. She outright apologized without blaming anyone. In fact she said it was a mis-statement, which is a political way to say "I said something wrong" without making yourself look bad.

"What I said was totally out of context from what I meant because I have been talking about helping coal country for a very long time," she said. "What I was saying is that the way things are going now, we will continue to lose jobs. That's what I meant to say."

She plans to redirect that business to solar power energy. She wants to switch the jobs from coal to solar. Her plans are clear. 

Your statement is better of course, but this is a candid moment not a prepared response. You should know that Clinton is not the most charismatic person. She's kinda awkward in candid moments, and her presence makes her look fake. Just saying.

That's a fantastic thing. A great idea that myself and most other people can get behind. Why didn't she say that instead of "we're going to put them out of business"?  I understand it can't be easy, but she needs to slow it down a bit. You're actually mixing things up. Hillary is actually the pragmatist who doesn't resort to this sort of hyperbole. Given that it is Bernie who speaks a lot in rhetoric, Hillary has had to adopt similar statements to seem less like a pessimist. This had the unfortunate result of unintentionally marginalizing a group.

Bernie would also have to inevitably backtrack when speaking to people employed by "big banks" once he supposedly breaks them up.

Hillary's got a huge target on her, though, and it seems her competition can do no wrong in the eyes of his supporters...meaning Trump 'cause let's face it, Bernie's bernt out. At least for this election. He's coming for Kanye's weave in 2020, though!

Anyway, I wish she'd adapt to that target. A little realism goes a long way when you're against someone as absurd as Trump and it'd be refreshing to hear some real talk during this election 'cause all I've heard are tale tales about walls, landing in sniper fire, and billionaires. She pretty much has this nomination in the bag so it's time to be the counter to her opponent. When derogatory terms are thrown by the orange clown, she should rise above that and speak some well thought out truth. When the overgrown but tiny-fingered Oompa Loompa makes an attack ad featuring her barking, she should rationally and calmly call him out on his lack of anything political while making sure it's not in poor taste.

Just...be the classy brain against the weak minded buffoon.
