StrawberryBlond 14,862
Even as someone who doesn't like Beyonce, it strikes me as weird that he can sell more than her too. I don't get why everyone loves him. His work for the most part, is mediocre and awful in places. His vocals are atrocious. He's called a rapper when he's RnB. All his songs are about random relationships we don't care about and are all whiney. Why do the worst ones always sell amazingly? Gender does come into it a bit. Male artists have always been respected more than females for some bizarre reason (even though I think, on the whole, women make better, more experimental, more interesting material). Male artists have got away with making boring music for decades. I don't get it. But I think these sales just go to prove that Beyonce's albums aren't the "event" her fans claim they are. Such an "event" that she's outsold by thousands the very next week by an album that had no videos and a lot less fanfare. Drake sells more than her, how are his albums not claimed to be an event but Beyonce's are? So, as you can see, they're each overrated in their own ways - Drake for talent, Beyonce for sales and relevancy.

I'm not sure if sexism is the right argument but there are other factors playing there, such as Drake being extremely trendy, he released the lead single like last year, the collabs... Beyoncé's release was more of a "surprise" release and it was announced only few weeks before the release. Also let's not forget TIDAL, aka the pandemy that spread in the music industry that also ruined her sales And oh, I forget, this album is controversial and people dislike Bey's controversy. Drake had momentum, he's generally very appreciated, Bey didn't but her release was a huge event and more impactful. IMO, people are still afraid of being judged by other people if they know that they like an artist who appeals to the LGBT community. Especially, straight men think people will think that they are gay right away. But that won't happen if you listen to male artists. People won't think you're gay because the music couldn't get any more masculine, and girls liking male artists? That's normal. It's like how girls can wear jeans and tank top, but men can't wear skirts or heels. 너와의 어색한 침묵이 차라리 좋아

Anderson123 38,372
Well, he's popular right now. The album has been released after the success of Hotline Bling and Work, his target audience is mostly straight guys. Rap sells a lot, especially in the US, just look at Eminem. He always sells a lot of albums even though he takes long breaks. His fanbase is there and it's not the typical fanbase that focuses on chart positions and jumps from popstar to popstar whenever one takes a break and another one is the girl of the moment. Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Kanye West, Lil Wayne etc they're all popular rappers.

Cos last time i checked it was artists like Adele and Taylor Swift who sell the most albums. Not sure where you get your idea from. Are you just trying to blame everything for being patriarchal? As such, I don't count it as a main track, in the same way as I don't count deluxe edition tracks on deciding an album's overall quality, it's all based on the standard edition. It was made clear that One Dance and Pop Style were the joint lead singles for this album and Wikipedia states this too. Hotline Bling was released too long ago to make it part of this album, so it was clearly just added as a bonus. Point is, the songs that launched this album's sales and were intended to be the leads didn't have videos. Beyonce has a music video for every track and can't sell as much. So, doesn't that throw the idea of "a visual album will make people buy it" out the window? That music videos for every track (or even any at all) aren't essential to an album's success? That perhaps more focus should be on making the music good as opposed to providing visuals?
XoXoJoanneGaga 629
He makes extremely homogeneous pop songs that appeal to all demographics and he's a meme, couple that with his hip-hop fans and it's easy to see how he has such huge first weeks. His albums don't really have legs though, his tape last year sold about 50% of it's lifetime sales in the first 3 days, and considering that Beyonce hasn't appealed to radio nor had a chart topping hit since the previous decade her sales are really impressive.
