Bernie Sanders: Superdelegates Should Switch Over To Me

Politico reports:

Bernie Sanders predicted Sunday that Hillary Clinton would not win enough pledged delegates to claim the nomination ahead of the Democratic convention in Philadelphia, and he delivered his most forceful call yet for superdelegates in states he’s won to consider throwing their support to him.

Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., the Vermont senator argued that Clinton “will need superdelegates to take her over the top at the convention in Philadelphia. In other words, it will be a contested convention.”

Sanders said that in the states where he handily defeated Clinton, superdelegates who aren’t supporting him should reconsider aligning themselves with the will of voters of those states.

Ignoring how much he's been insulting and demonizing them throughout this campaign process as if they weren't there from the beginning:

1) The super-delegates are not going to align with the candidate with fewer pledged delegates.

2) The super-delegates are not going to align with the candidate who has done nothing to fund down-ballot races.

3) The super-delegates are not going to align with someone who is not a party member.

It's as if Sanders doesn't actually know how this works. Maybe he does but doesn't even care about the damage he's doing.

I'm all for him staying in the race if he wants, but he should stop embarrassing himself.

A particular comment by a rational Bernie supporter made it all the more clear:

"Seems to me that this only thing this is going to do is to leave those who are new to politics, those who he has brought into the process (which is something he really deserves a lot of credit for) with the feeling that he was robbed, when the nomination goes against him.

Very few of them, I'd wager, will go on to make a reasoned selection of the best choice that's available, and think about getting more involved locally, and otherwise do the things that actually make a difference politically. Instead, I suspect that most will become more cynical and disengaged than before. Stop voting, stop paying attention, "They're all crooks in the pocket of big business and the system is rigged".

And then wonder, fifteen years from now, why their country is such a mess."

Sounds just about right from what I've been reading on the forums. Perhaps some Bernie supporters can leave that echo chamber they're in and discuss the matter with other supporters if they truly care about the country.

Who's talking about Hillary though? What does she have to do with it?

We're discussing the superdelegates that Sanders has repeatedly demonized and insulted throughout the campaign. Is that the only thing you hung up on though? What about the three points I listed. Do you disagree?

I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise of your impressions on Hillary. The're wrong and I've already proven them wrong several times, and she has not been exposed by anyone so don't revise history. 

I agree though that he's had a positive impact on the election process and perhaps has revitalized younger people into being more active. Hopefully he's smart and does not destroy his legacy by ultimately turning off the same people.

What revolution? And he didn't win anything. At the start, his goal might have been to garner attention for himself and his policies, but it's clear now that he is going for the nomination and guess what? He's getting clobbered, so no he's not won anything

This doesn't really surprise me, as Bernie has shown a constant unwillingness to face reality. The superdelegates are going with the candidate that has three million more votes and has more pledged delegates. That's the reality of the situation. 

Nate Cohn (NYT) on Twitter:  Hillary has already won enough states to win a majority of Super Delegates under Bernie rules, even if she loses all remaining contests

Dan Merica (CNN) on Twitter:.  The tough truth for Sanders & co: HRC would still be leading by roughly 550 if superdelegates followed his rules

 

Sander's strategy is now to have the "establishment" he hates so much (and claims to reject), step in and give him the nomination by overruling the actual voters. (the ones he claims to respect)
