Cruz Continues Anti-Trans Attacks

Ever since Donald Trump came out against North Carolina’s hate law, Ted Cruz has made the “bathroom” issue a major talking point of his media appearances. He did so once again this morning on Meet The Press. From the Human Rights Campaign:

“After invoking the importance of the Bill of Rights, Ted Cruz had the gall to spread vicious lies about transgender people and laws that deny us critical freedoms,” said HRC Communications Director Jay Brown. “Ted Cruz’s fear-mongering campaign about attacks in restrooms has never been documented in the decades that more than 100 local non-discrimination protections have existed. The reason we need these local laws in the first place is because Congress has yet to pass a federal law protecting LGBT people, who are at risk of being fired, evicted or denied services in a majority of states because of who they are. Ted Cruz showed us firsthand today how important it is that we elect Hillary Clinton to fight for full federal equality in November.”

Why is Hillary the only option?

Ellen DeGeneres claiming (i.e. pretending) Hillary was the only candidate in this election who cared about gay rights teas. Odd.

This article is about Ted Cruz. Hillary came up in one comment and for a good reason.

It's not that she's the only candidate that can do it. It's just that she's the only candidate who is in a position to do it.

They realize that Hillary is very likely going to be the Democratic nominee and the only conceivable person likely to be in the presidential race who can defeat the Republican ticket.

Do you disagree with that logic?

In any case let's keep this thread about how revolting Cruz is.

Not really. I just expect an organization like the Human Rights Campaign to be a bit more neutral, I guess. Anyway, didn't mean for it to go off-topic, I was just surprised reading the last sentence.

Regarding Cruz: eyeroll, ridiculous opinion, but how would they indeed protect that law from being misused? Haven't heard anything about that yet and I'm curious.

Why would they be neutral? They clearly have liberal values which are aligned with the Democratic platform and it's very likely that Hillary is going to get the nomination. They're starting the promotion now, even if Sanders is still in the race for the principle of it. It's nothing personal and not meant to offend.

The issue with the Bathroom Bills is less about enforcement and more about painting trans people as boogiemen to ensure the success of further discriminatory policies in the future. Fighting it is necessary because it's a slippery slope that promotes ignorance.

Well.. ok, but he does raise an interesting point that I know many ordinary people would be interested in :chica: How does this practically work? He literally says transgenders aren't a danger, he says that grown men could easily use this law to enter girls' bathrooms for predatory reasons, and that that's why it's not common sense to just allow this based on ideals of equality without taking into account the ways in which such regulations can be abused.

I mean, if I was a parent, I'd like to know too and I do find it interesting that talking about these issues is a bit taboo since even bringing them up already seems to imply you're dissing transgenders or denying their freedom.

So while the context may be true of him just using this as a way to get more discrimination through in the future, if you're gonna silence this guy, you have to respond to exactly the argument he's bringing up to cater to people's fears and confusion, which is: how are you indeed gonna stop rapists from entering a little girls' bathroom if they're legally allowed to do so? Just calling him an anti-trans guy and trying to censor him isn't gonna do much to convincingly prove him wrong.

*snip*

It's the fact that he brings them up in the same sentence

He's categorizing trans people in the same vein as rapists.

I'm not even making my own assumptions. This is based on Ted Cruz's platform and previous statements.

Don't you think predators do this anyway?! The bill is not about protecting children, it's literally attacking transgender people. He's just trying to appeal to everyone with a "fake worry."

Not in the video you posted.

And again, even if that might be, what's the point of ignoring a point he brings up that's actually important? :emma: Are we not allowed to discuss that or something?

But like I said later in the post: if you're gonna effectively oppose this guy, you better come up with something better than "He's discriminatory! He's anti-trans!" because the point he's bringing up is actually gonna convince a lot of people that he's right about something everyone else isn't talking about.

Which is exactly why I think we should discuss it. But I guess I'm alone on that then.

Again, a rapist will go into a bathroom of whatever gender. You really think that this would increase because anyone can go into their own bathroom that they identify with? Is there any actual research in this accusation or is it solely fear?

There are several gener-neutral bathrooms around the world. Why is the US so scared?

I'm not thinking anything, I'm just interested in how you have to deal with the subject if someone brings it up 'cause like I said, I know nothing about it. Your argument about the odds of a rapist doing that is I think already good, I personally hadn't immediately thought of that but that sounds reasonable. It's hardly an ideal or even a suitable location for predatory purposes in the first place, no matter what gender.

I'm all for gender-neutral bathrooms tbh. I'm guessing people will instantly become used to such an arrangement if they use it enough. The whole idea of a separated bathroom based on gender is quite absurd to begin with anyway.

There, that was easy. Thanks for not calling me a transphobe.

Chic

Republicans align very much with the ideal of "restricting freedom from the innocent is not worth the punishment of the guilty". That's why they're so fervent about gun rights. Punishing the rule-abiding citizens, in their eyes, will do little to quell the actions of criminals. Criminals will still commit crimes regardless of whether or not there are laws to stop them. People can still call the cops if there is someone creepy in the women's bathroom. Might it give them an easier ride into the men's room? Who knows, the backlash might make women form a natural wall against it and try to prevent men's entrance themselves.

Also, it occurs to me that many people discussing this issue are uneducated and don't consider the numerous possibilities. Nobody is ever afraid when I use the women's bathroom, yet in theory I could potentially be just as much a creep as a burly man walking in there. Obviously, I'm not, but visual passability trumps all. I'm stealth, and like other stealth transgirls, I have already won this argument simply by being trans without anyone being the wiser. It's still a battle for those who aren't passable, however. And even I'm conflicted on it! Personally, I made a vow to never use the women's bathroom until I went stealth, so I was afraid as being seen as a creep. That would have been extremely uncomfortable all around.

People think with their eyes on this issue, that's the truth of it. As long as you look female and don't look like a threat, nobody will think you shouldn't be in there. The ones who make the "penis in men's room, vagina in women's room" don't know what to say when they see me, a perfectly passable transgirl, saying that I use the women's bathroom. Because it makes perfectly logical sense visually, and that even trumps genitals, hence why I focused on appearance before that. I can nearly feel their blood clotting when someone like me comes into the equation of this argument.

Well in people's defense, and mine, we operate under the assumption that most people know Ted Cruz, his policies, and his statements. Sorry if there wasn't context.

Yes. That's the best solution to me. Bathrooms should be gender neutral.

Why would anyone call you a transphobe for wanting more information though?:duck:

That's fine. I don't pay attention to Republicans, so :air: But now I know enough about him, that's for sure :chica:

Sometimes asking questions is already equated to discriminating :poot:

Bad experiences with easily triggered peeps :poot:
