En_Sabah_Nur 9,359
Did Gaga bring back dance music & 80's fashion back into the mainstream?? I always thought she did, even though I saw remnants of 80s fashion coming back in style prior to her. (i.e. Kanye Shutter Glasses & Katy Perry fingerless leather gloves in IKAG music video, etc.) As for dance music, I remember following Just Dance climbing the iTunes Charts from number 54 & I remember thinking would it go any further? Since dance music hadn't been (mainstream) popular in America since the early 90's... This is why I have always said that she has had such a major cultural impact, that very few artist ever achieve!!! Now you know you've made it when you bring back(leggings, ripped leggings, studs, spikes, leather jackets, platform heels, leather biker hats, etc.) or introduce new styles (i.e. Hair Bow, heeless platforms, ), etc. and they become HOT streetwear trends... So what do you guys think? Agree or Disagree?? Egypt. W

PopThatArt 2,193
Dance music? No. Kylie Minogue was big in America with her dance hits around 2001, Can't Get You Out of My Head, etc, And then there was Madonna with the dance-pop electronica sound of Confessions on the Dancefloor. then there was songs produced by Timbaland with Keri Hilson, Justin Timberlake, and Nelly Furtado. Gaga brought the europop sound to the forefront of pop music. And not necessarily 80s fashion, more of the avant garde to the mainstream. 2001 - Kylie: Go see A Star is Born
PopThatArt 2,193
With Believe by Cher, ultimately she ushered in the dance era of music in America from the late 90s into the 2000s. But with Cher however, the sound didn't necessarily take off and spawn people to do dance, but it was big on the charts nonetheless. It was around the time of Britney doing generic pop that dominated until Kylie Minogue came with the synthpop and disco flavor with Fever, that took in America followed by Timbaland's productions with Keri Hilson and then Nelly Furtado before Lady Gaga burst onto the scene. The only 2 songs I ever remember being popular in America by Kylie Minogue are "Locomotion" & "Can't Get You Outta My Head", and even though you listed some perfect examples. None of them(maybe minus Madonna & Britney) had a string of hits. I can't remember the last time 2 dance songs went to number 1 on the Billboard Charts back to back(Just Dance & Poker Face) and that's why I said & thought that she brought back dance music. As for 80's fashion, she brought both the Avant Garde & 80's Biker/Bad chick fashion back at least... Leotards too! Egypt. W
PopThatArt 2,193
I think it's also worth mentioning Cher & Kylie ultimately influenced the synth pop dance electronic flavor of Confessions on the Dance Floor by Madonna and In the Zone & Blackout by Britney. But Madonna and Britney won't admit that. Go see A Star is Born

The point is that Keri, Nelly & Timbaland were all following the R&B/hip-hop trend of the early 2000's. Let's not pretend like that wasn't the biggest music genre at the time. Gaga really had the first dance-pop SMASH of the 2000's, at least in the U.S. since I consider Cher a part of the late 90's and she didn't have a strong follow up hit. (I love Cher though omg). Kylie has never really been relevant in the U.S. at all and Madonna was blacklisted by U.S. radios. On the other hand, Gaga brought back something new & her along with the BEP really reintroduced a whole culture/style to the U.S.

AlexanderLevi2 5,849
You all talk about Kylie Minogue in the US as if she is a household name... I can assure you she is not. If I showed someone a song of hers, they would recognize it but fail to bring up a name. You gays need to calm down I like her but she is not very relevant, culturally speaking, in America. Kylie has influenced a lot of our pop stars whether we'd like to believe it or not. Look at the Kylie's Wow video then look at Lady Gaga's ARTPOP release concert. It's very hard to try not see the similarities. Yep Kylie had a huge influence in bringing Dance music to the pop world. Britney Spears Toxic video is basically a mash up of KM's Light Years concert performance outfit and then the same futuristic shots the were in the KM's CGYOOMH video. The angles of the motorcycle scene in Toxic and the car scene KM's video are identical. Lady Gaga's ARTPOP release concert. Not the ArtRave tour is very similar to KM's Wow styling. JustPokeHerFace 2,564
I think she helped usher in the popularity of synth pop in the late 2000s/early 2010s after R&B became the mainstream sound for a few years.
Quartz 12,515
Dance was already a thing prior Gaga. What she brought to the table was hardcore thumping dance if that makes sense. Listen at how heavily electronic Poker face is and you'll see why she stood out that year. Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊

I'm not necessarily speaking about the influence on other artists but rather the over exaggeration of users on this site saying how "massive" she is in America... She's not. Out of all of my friends, family, etc... I'm the only one who knows her by name. Currently listening to Joanne

You do realize that creative directors drive these artist's style, performances and videos. Just like producers will have similar sounds when they work with different artists, creative directors will be influenced by other artists when they work with pop stars. Do you really think Beyonce was the one who came up with that opening? Also, your examples are VERY weak. The Beyonce one was very influenced by Kylie but is NOT copying and the Britney Spears and artRAVE example actually makes me chuckle Currently listening to Joanne
