Contribution is calculated by GDP and other factors. - EU defense could probably protect themselves, however this is the EU. MANY countries put together. - The US clearly has larger influence worldwide. He never said "best" country. He said "largest" aka one with most influence in many aspects. Not all of Europe is in NATO though; Sweden, Finland, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland a few smaller nations aren't I guess they're still de facto protected by NATO due to their locations and policies of neutrality but that's not entirely a fair accusation that they're dependent on US military support.
