If ARTPOP was released in 2011 instead of Born This Way

As we all know, before Born This Way's release Gaga was at her highest peak yet due to TF + TFM's huge success.

So let's imagine for a moment that instead of Born This Way Gaga released ARTPOP in 2011, which means no LGBT propaganda, no Madonna rip-off accusations, no religious controversy etc.

How successful ARTPOP could have been?

Which song would you like to be picked as the first single, that was destined to hit the top following that hysterical hype around Gaga back then?

That depends on what you mean, exactly.

If ARTPOP was released in 2013 without the messy Troy-esque problems, it would have fared quite well.

If ARTPOP was released in 2011 with the same messy Troy-esque problems, it most likely would have fared the same.

The amount of times I have thought about this...

I don't know really. ARTPOP was just not as solid as TF/M. Maybe it would have done better with proper management back then... But idk it'd be so weird to not have Born This Way in 2011 because it was iconic. And a lot of you would have supposedly killed themselves :wtf:

APPLAUSE and DWYW would've slayed the charts...#1 hot 100 bb hits for sure but at the same time i can't imagine not having born this way in 2011...that album saved my life:giveup:

ARTPOP didn't underperform solely because of the Troy Carter mess. It's not like Gaga underperformed despite promoting the album heavily. Do What U Want didn't have a music video, although it did sell 1 million copies in the US and G.U.Y. was left unpromoted. A fourth and fifth single could have been produced if G.U.Y. did well.

What I'm trying to say is although the time of the release date does affect its performance, much of ARTPOP's underperformance was due to her own inaction.

this is an interesting perspective because I feel born this way came out because of how successful she was with The Fame and The Fame Monster so she wanted to give back to her LGBT supporters but add some controversy to it (where talking about Gaga here)

In 2011 EDM was coming into its full "mainstream", well to me it was because i was very much into into underground/freestyle stuff for a lot of years prior to popular music festivals and the huge variety of DJ's now but i feel ARTPOP would of been really huge if she released it right after TFM's hype! I still think Applause would of been a great lead choice during that time cause it has that build up of a beat but had that pop sound to it!

Until this day i still listen to and love ARTPOP so the release she went with was still perfection in my books!

I meant the second.

welp, to be honest, Troy was the manager during TF and TFM and look how successful those eras were.

ARTPOP would have fared just fine with this:

1. Applause - August 2013

2. Do What U Want - November 2013

3. Gypsy - February 2014

4. G.U.Y. - May 2014

5. MANiCURE - August 2014

But, answering the question of the OP: If the release sequence was vice versa and ARTPOP had been released first, it would have exploded. Fairly sure it would have outsold BTW by a landslide. At that time, it would have knocked all other music out of the water. EDM was just becoming popular, and once again, Gaga would have been ahead of the trend. Songs like G.U.Y., Aura, Swine, Mary Jane Holland, Partynauseous, etc. would have been PRAISED

Nope. It falls as a fan favorite like Bloody Mary, So Happy I Could Die, etc. songs that would have never worked as a single. Then there's others like Gypsy and Monster that needed to be singles.
