Yeah, I even watched Yu-Gi-Oh , so many that do not look Asian at all. :smh:  But I guess, they HAVE to be Asian, because it's Anime and Asian. Now I sound too ignorant I guess, if I would make a movie, I would have just took a cast that looks like the characters. And that coming from every damn race, if they just fit the character. Where do you find a Black Asian, for example, so easily?

I agree if I were casting for something like Pokemon I would cast a white woman for Misty, a black guy for Brock, and a hispanic for Ash, people that actually look like the characters but I wouldn't even involve myself in that mess because I would get slammed for not casting an asian to play a blue eyed orange hair character :poot:

I'm a little bit confused, cause in basically every anime japanese characters ARE presented with brown, blue, pink, violet, green hair, whereas some of characters being from abroad are presented in the same way, and I never see the diferrence. I mean, they don't look Asian in anime, so why they have to look Asian in movie adaptation?

Sugar, spice, and everything nice.

It wouldn't matter if the character "looked" Japanese. Hollywood would still cast a white lead.

And just cause the character doesn't look Asian doesn't mean that you should automatically cast a white person. The look isn't the end all be all. The fact that it's a Japanese anime set in Asia is indication enough that maybe someone Japanese should be set to play the role. And nobody should say "Oh if an Asian actress was good enough, they would have put her in" cause Hollywood doesn't even give Asian entertainers the time of day, let alone the lead role in a major movie.

Yeah but tbh, if they were casting an Asian actress, it wouldn't go very well nor people would even fcking realise who they are. If you, for example, would have seen a random Asian actress on a big poster, would you even see the movie? Regardless of knowing the Anime, that would be totally out of the picture. And that's what Hollywood is focusing on. They need to take profit out of their production. Only anime fans and some randomers would go see the movie, and THAT is not enough.

The project would definitely not exist at all if ScarJo had not endorsed it. Do you think Hollywood cares about diversity? Diversity doesn't bring people to theaters. Megastars like Scarlett Johansson do.

But there should be a respect for other cultures. I agree that Hollywood doesn't care, sadly, but try to be the exception. Just because everyone does it doesn't mean Scarlet has to as well. Stand up for a change.

The same people who are ardently in favor of Hollywood taking creative liberties with original source material when it means creating more racial diversity in film are the same people who are outraged when Hollywood takes creative liberties by casting a white actor to portray a character that was originally a minority in the source material.

A black James Bond? Great. A white Anime character? Outrageous.

If telling your tribes story is vitally important to you, then you tell it, don't expect a cooperation like Hollywood to tell if for you.

I agree with this as well actually. If it's wrong to change the source material one way, it's wrong the other way too.

So make it white or it's not right. Yeah. Makes total sense. That's not racist AT ALL. :air:

One man, won't change anything. Take an example of Sony, did they care? Nope. It was all about the moneyz.

People should be more pissed at the creators for "selling out" and letting the west make the movie if anything. You can't blame the U.S. for making a film aimed at it's population... common sense people.

My eyes find it more puzzling when an asian actor plays an anime character because the features don't match up as much as they do when a western-featured actor plays them  Not sure if I'm conveying my point correctly or if I'm even being politically correct, but please know that I mean no disrespect or harm

You have to be an avid fan or Asian to understand the differences. There was a tv station that did an interview about this concept and why characters don't "seem to look Asian" but are still given Japanese names and whatnot. There are very subtle differences though.

If I saw an Asian actress on a movie poster, that gives me MORE of a reason to see a movie because it shows that the producers are taking risks and most likely hired the actress based on merit, rather than potential profit and for the sake of having a big name just to attract the GP.
