Quark 7,085
o<(0_0)>o We know that most pop stars today are super controlled by their music labels. But it seems to me that Britney Spears started this "Puppet Popstars" trend. She seems to be the first or at least one of the first basic popstars with a pretty look to be super controlled by their label rather than the artist dominating with their artistic vision. Even now, the only thing Britney and many others do is lend their simple vocals (even this is questionable coming from Britney) while their team produces and polishes a product for the masses. So what do you think?
RainingOnMe 7,250
yes. but that's because she was told what to do by people around her. how to act, how to dress, what to do, etc. but yes it did start the manufactured artist trend in my opinion. weed 71,072
If Britney is a puppet she didn't start it but ya I feel like she did, at least the most successful of them

freebit 6,117
Manufactured popstars controlled by their label is nothing new. Look at the pop music scene of the 1950s and 60s. Many of those artists just showed up to the studio and sang. Phil Spector's control over The Ronettes is a good example.
Antoni 5,332
Corporate control of music icons dates back to the 70s. Britney is just the first puppet whose strings were seen by the audience. My name isn't Timmers

True, but it seems like back then they at least picked mostly great singers. Plus today everything seems even more manufactured

Meredith Grey 3,113
She's not the first but when people think of Puppet Popstars, she's definitely the poster child for it.
