By mainstream female singer standards, she's kinda old (she's 33 and didn't break out until she was 27) and a bit of ageism can come into play. Her work is not the kind that appeals to the majority, especially as its become more urban-focused and uses more swear words and sexual terms, which also means it can't be played everywhere because it's too explicit. She tends to release when there's a lot of competition (or even just one big piece of competition, like when Anaconda was just one step away). She doesn't have that big of a fanbase in the grand scheme of things. Above all, it can just be OFTT - One Of Those Things. Some people just never get #1's, it's that simple.
