Question about Formation.

So Beyoncé is my favourite singer other than gaga, and formation has quickly become one of my all time favourite videos.

I love how politically charged it is, and how it is shining light on a truly important problem in todays society.

My question is one that has been asked many times, but this time I don't mean it in a way that comes off as rude.

I genuinely want to know what would happen if a white artist released this video. I do know that it would receive much more publicity, and be viewed as even more controversial than Beys version, but would there be more hate?

Would people call that artist racist for using black culture in their work (even if it was for political reasons), or would people view it in a good way, to see a white artist finally addressing the racial problems in our world?

I know that this question may come off as racist, but you really have to understand that its not supposed to. I genuinely want to know.

Spoiler

P.S. sorry for all the grammatical errors, and that it may be hard to read and understand, im typing very fast.

In reality all cultures borrow from each other. Everything originated from something. But to answer your question, I don't think it would have been as big if a white artist released it. The song needed someone with a strong black presence to hit home the message and meaning of the work. I think the song is more about the content instead of how catchy it is, so without Beyonce it would have been an irrelevant song

It depends. They are celebrating a group who protected them against a racist and violent group. People say that they killed, but they killed to protect people who were being targeted. Racism vs. self-defense is what ignorant people can't see because they focus on something to degrade it. It'd be the worst thing if a white artist celebrated the KKK, because, well... come on :emma: I'm not sure about how much controversy it would have caused, but hopefully a lot of negative reactions shaming those who celebrate the KKK if that's the group they would celebrate and you're hinting at.

I think people would see it as a "white person to the rescue" kind of situation. People think people of "colour" should be the ones fighting their own battles and in allowing a white person to do what you said in the OP is almost going against that idea. Even though I believe we should all bring awareness to important issues regardless of our race, society believes that races should stay within their own niche and fight for your people within it, not across the boundaries.

A white artist should not have done this song/video, because we need more black people speaking about black issues. And with someone as big and influential as Beyoncé is, she was the perfect one for the job.

It's much deeper than that. The reason it's important to have a POC (specifically black), doing this song is because had a White person done it, the message wouldn't have been as impactful. Not only that, but it would've been insulting because they wouldn't have a clue about how it is to be Black or live true Black Culture.

Anyone can speak for racial justice, but this specific song was meant for a Black voice and Black voice only.

I am totally off topic. But I expected this song to have like 100-150m views at least o.o..The media made it seem huge (It can only be viewed with a link but still)

I still hate the song btw

If I white person did the song, the song and video would barely even make sense. She's talking black people get in formation and even more the whole society to get in formation and stop the black injustice. It comes off way better as black person because no matter how involved a white person is in black issues... they are still not black.

I don't think you'll like what I have to say about Beyonce, Thomas P, but I'm afraid it has to be done.

Well, it wouldn't make sense if I a white person did it because it's a song about blacks for blacks but I understand the sentiment of what you're saying. And it would definitely be taken bad if a white person did it. White knighting and all that. But above all, it would be criticised for taking a social issue and making it all about the artist. Because that's what Beyonce does in it. She doesn't once address race issues. From beginning to end, it's nothing but her bragging about herself. She even incorporates samples of that YouTuber talking to make it sound as if it's in reference to herself (and this person is dead! How disrespectful!). It's a totally self-absorbed piece that is nothing to do with race but convinces people that it is.

I am shocked that people have fallen for it and have actually given Beyonce their money for her tour. But I'm even more shocked that I'm the only one to call her out on this. That is how expertly this woman is at deceiving the world, in so many ways. But I see right through her antics and I'm so glad I never bought into her hype like everyone else did. She's always been calculated, manipulative and self-obsessed but I sometimes feel like I'm the only one who sees it. So I inform people of this whenever I get the chance, in the hopes they'll see her for who she truly is, not what she wants you to believe she is.
