Juvelius 375
Marina is the most famous modern greek singer worldwide,i have seen her live this march and i can tell you i am very proud of what she achieved in her career. And i think she will continue by releasing music though itunes with small producers or something like that.
StrawberryBlond 14,891
This is the route a lot of artists go when they release a flop album (sorry, guys, it did flop) and it's understandable, but at the same time, totally counterproductive. You'll never get success if you don't keep putting yourself out there and taking a big break after underperformance is a bad idea. Your chances of making a comeback, especially if you're a woman over the age of 30, is one in a million. I just don't get it. If you made the choice to be a singer and pursue fame, surely you want to make albums for the public and won't suddenly crave a break after just 3 albums and only 6 years of fame? Don't choose to become famous in the first place if you think you might throw in the towel after a while, just when you've managed to gain a fanbase who will miss you. Whispering 18,865
I've never seen her mentioned anywhere outside of here. I guess she struggles to make it to the next step, so maybe she is tired of trying? Maybe she wants to try for a different life, if she isn't as successful as she wants to be? Nothing wrong with that. If is her life, after all!

Even though Froot wasn't exactly a commercial success....it was by far her most successful album. And her fame keeps growing with every album she puts out. She might not be a household name yet, but she has gained a massive following. What concerns me the most is the fact that she just doesn't really seem to care for being a famous singer anymore. A few years ago, all she wanted was to be a massive star. And now it seems like she has discovered that she would rather just be a normal person. If she had any care at all about building her fame and career, she wouldn't take a break right now. She's at her peak right now. A one or two year break to work on an album would be fine, but the break she's talking about seems more like a 5-10 year break with no music plans at all. I don't think she's established enough to take that long of break and have her fanbase still there waiting for her after several years....so she will basically lose everything she has worked so hard to get. Fusel 1,109
Ok but she gave the same statements, just not as strong, after Electra Heart. Let her do what she wants and let her come back when it's right for her. The music will probably be better if she waits for her muse to inspire her instead of forcing herself to release something. Also her being tired of the music industry is a good thing imo. Sounds promising for the future quality of her work. I mean she literally said she'll be back so

Her biggest album was her debut here and she got to #11 with the lead off her second album, which also went to #1. She wasn't a huge seller, but good for a more alternative artist with limited promo. But Froot was a big downturn for her because there was just no promo for it. At most, she might go back to being a British-specific artist, like a lot of acts we have here who just couldn't make it worldwide. It's better than nothing. 21 minutes ago, pink sushi said: Even though Froot wasn't exactly a commercial success....it was by far her most successful album. I get what you're saying. Her sales may go down with every album but ironically, her fanbase is growing as she becomes heard of in America and the rest of the world. Which is why I can't understand why her numbers don't improve. I agree, she seems to have lost the drive she had at the beginning to be a massive star. I guess not getting what she wanted made her lose her passion. But even so, I don't understand why you would work so hard just to take a big break that's going to ruin everything. Why can't she be happy just being an indie artist and making music for her fans? I mean, she seems like a 'music, not the bling' kinda person. Froot has been her most successful album yet. It debuted in the top 10 in the US whereas Electra Heart debuted at like 31. She's definitely gained more fame in the US since Electra Heart. I don't know if what made her lose her passion to be a massive star was just not getting it. It's not like her fame is decreasing or staying the same after each album. It continues to grow! Her fame has really shot up since the start of the Electra Heart era. I sorta feel that she's gotten a little taste of fame with the level she is at now, and as she's grown older she's realized that fame isn't something she really wants in life and she would rather be a normal person. Ty3009 232
People in this thread trying to portray Marina's career as a complete flop are delusional. No, she was never going to sell like Adele, Gaga, Taylor, Katy Perry, etc. Some of you act like if you're not on Top 40 radio your career is a waste of time. It's kind of sad since there's a wealth of great music out there not in that sandbox. But you can make a great living making music that you love, performing club tours or smaller venues (which are actually a more fun experience than stadium shows IMO), doing the festival circuit, etc. I've seen Marina at Coachella twice. In 2011 her tent was like half full. In 2015 she played the main stage in front of thousands of people bopping to her music. She definitely has a following and has progressed with each project. That said, I think Marina's being a bit dramatic. Hard to say with certainty. I'm guessing she's just taking a break for a couple of years but will be back with a new album once her creative juices are flowing. If she does give it up, it'll be sad but better than carrying on if her heart's not in it.
pink sushi 4,351
Today is the day. Marina performs at Lollapalooza Argentina. The final performance.
LaLuna 12,732
Let's not be overdramatic here. She said she's taking a break and that she'll probably come back eventually. Maybe her not wanting to be a pop star means that she wants to take her music and her career in a new direction, and just needs time to figure it out.
