Bernie Sanders: If You're White, You Don't Know What It's Like To Be Poor

The OP and no one else seems to be including the last part of that quote, the part that clarifies the first sentence.

“When you’re white you don’t know what it’s like to be living in a ghetto, you don’t know what it’s like to be poor. You don’t know what it’s like to be hassled when you walk down the street, or dragged out of a car. We must be firm in making it clear that we will end institutionalized racism and reform a broken criminal justice system.

He is explaining, albeit clumsily, that there are differences in how minorities experience poverty, because of institutionalized racism and our criminal justice system.

I know telling someone to "**** off" is easy, and attempting to understand a person's intentions requires slightly more effort, but if you actually care about poverty, than you have Sanders to thank for the plight of the impoverished being a talking point in this election.

/end the thread.

He might as well include nationality in this because unlike what most Americans think, there are white people in just as shitty environments as black people outside of the US.

So he shouldn't really be using race at all. Rather he should be talking about Americans.

I usually have the same viewpoint with what Sanders says but are there really no white poor people in the U.S.?

Maybe he used the wrong type of words idk

Theres plenty of poor white ppl in US im not sure this was good choice if words

by statistics white ppl are the best off overall but there are still those who struggle

lets put it this way, white ppl have the advantage but doesnt garantee they wont be poor

Same here in Canada. Unless your in my city Brampton (largest Indian comunity in the world outside India) and whites here are actually a minority :air:

Funny, because the news media & some black people are seeing this statement from a completely different angle.  Their offended by him implying that all black people live in ghettos & are all poor.  I know he miss-worded this VERY badly... But, all this controversy from last night's debate could not have come at a worst time.  Since Michigan's primary is tomorrow & he is already 13 points behind Hillary...  :wtf:

Idk it's out of character for him to say such a thing, boggles my mind. He knows that isn't true. His words must have come out wrong, too bad he didn't check himself and fix that lapse in his judgment.

Its bad wording :emma: Not worth getting upset about imo, but to each their own :duck:

私自身もこの世の中も誰もかれもが, どんなに華やかな人生でも, どんなに悲惨な人生でも, いつかは変貌し, 破壊され、消滅してしまう. すべてがもともとこの世に存在しない一瞬の幻想なのだから

Bernie supporter here.

He grew up white and poor in a rent controlled apartment. Why on earth he said it this way, I have no idea. It certainly isn't true, nor does everything else he has to say support that single "headline".

This. As soon as he said those words I knew they were going to be used against him. I understand that he was trying to say that white people are privileged but he just didn't say it eloquently. :emma:

People should learn about his history and it would be obvious that what he said wasn't exactly what he meant when he himself is white and has been poor.

You forgot to add "for his benefit" at the end :awkney:

You forgot to remember that if people work hard and lift others up along the way, it isn't a bad thing to benefit. :awkney:

But please, continue to explain to me why successful people should be dragged for the rest of their lives because your broke and jealous while you still stan for Lady Gaga to have chart success.... :lolga:

Kermit the frog

he obviously didn't mean that there are no poor white people :duck: It's just that black people living in ghettos sort of reach a deeper level of poorness.

so my white friends were imaginary :green:

yeah it was only like 2 of them but still :laughga:

the harassed part is the only thing that might be true but not if you count the white dudes with us that were harassed right along with us because they were skaters and cops always wanted to **** with the skaters.

That's his point tho. He's not saying you can't be white and poor. He's saying that it's rarity for white people to be poor because they enjoy the privileges that the racist system has for them. But even when there are poor white people, they will never have to face the racism and mistreatment that poor POC face. Low-income communities are frequently targeted by the police to arrest people, and more often than not there is a lot of racial profiling that goes on in their busts. White people will never have to face stereotypes and be mistaken for a drug dealer or abuser just because they're poor, and they will not be denied a job or education on those basis either. He wasn't wrong, he just chose his words poorly.

When Bernie stereotypes an entire group of people it's "poor wording".

When Trump makes a period joke he is "sexist, misogynistic, hater, etc..." :saladga:

Guess which candidate has actually provided jobs for thousands of women, people of color, people in poverty and actually lifted people out of bad circumstances?

:lolga:

So has Bernie. He was mayor of Burlington at the turn of its success, ya know...

It was in fact poor wording, see my post in the previous page. Bernie grew up poor, of course he knows white people can be poor. What he meant is that even poor whites have privileges and rights over poor POC.

That isn't accurate ^.

I'm 100000000% pro bernie, but I can't stand inaccurate memes like this. Bernie completely owned his statement and clarified it. Of course he didn't mean it the way it came out, but its silly in the era of youtube to pretend it wasn't said or that Fox was just making it up. Accuracy and honesty always prevails, and it will prevail for him. His character is bigger than one small word mistake that is obviously contrary to his entire world-view. His response is posted above at 3:30ish.

Hmm, thank you for the clarification. Never trust a meme tbh
