PoshLife 16,908
Wooo okay so I saw KPop on Broadway today. Everyone I cared about was there! They all sounded really, really good - everyone in the cast was a great singer. Luna in particular sounded fantastic. The dancing was also good, and there was a lot of lighting effects and such during the performances and there were some moving set pieces. The acting was... well, let's just say the acting isn't really the point lol. A few of them were very good actors but for the most part you could tell that wasn't really the focus. The story was meh, it kind of just existed to connect the songs together. It was basically a concert with some storytelling in between. I'll post a brief synopsis of what the show's about in the spoiler below for anyone interested. But I'm so happy I got to see Luna live, that was cool. And former members of SPICA and Miss A, too. Wow. Spoiler So the show's about three kpop acts that are about to debut in the US under the same label: a soloist (played by Luna) whose childhood was kind of a sob story and who has a very strained relationship with the woman who runs the label, and who has a boyfriend who wants her to leave with him; a girl group that's debuting after being trainees for a long time, some of whose members are thinking of leaving the company; and a boy group that's having a hard time integrating a new member who's Korean-American after one of the original members left. While they're rehearsing for their debut, there's a documentary-maker with them who's trying to bring out all these problems they're having for the camera (but you know kpop idols never talk about stuff like that openly). So it kind of touched on all of the major issues we usually hear about when it comes to the kpop industry: hidden relationships, toxic managers who overwork their idols, groups disbanding, international members, etc. A lot of the 'story' is basically Luna's character's rise to fame told in flashbacks in between some stuff going on in the present day. Most of the musical numbers are the groups' dress rehearsals, and then at the end of the show we actually see the debut stage as like the grand finale. 1

PoshLife 16,908
nnnn that KPop on Broadway show I saw just announced it's abruptly closing next week It only just opened recently, too. Apparently they were having trouble filling the seats, and they got a pretty bad review from the New York Times which likely doesn't help. It was almost sold out when I was there, though They should try doing a tour of major cities, or doing a run in California specifically. I bet they could do numbers there.
