Even Applause is more "rape song" than Just Dance is monsters are sometimes too... Really don't see how Applause could relate to rape. I am interested to hear your interpretation. Even approaching it as subtext really doesn't work. I think the song is pretty self explanatory. Being drunk to the point of having to dance to forget the fact that you having a panic attack is kind of a different ballpark. I love how people describe Just Dance as a fun, party song when nothing in the song sounds fun at all. Having too much. alcohol. Sudden vision loss. Disappearance of date. Losing your keys, phone etc.. Freaking out because you don't know where the hell you are but you tell yourself to Just Dance to avoid having a ****ing meltdown. Lol. Sound fun to you? No. So naturally I think there is something more to be said about the content of the song. A lot of artists release their pain in the guise of a joyous front. Just like Applause is really about releasing the depression of being away from her fans.

TimisaMonster 31,073
Maybe just about getting drunk at a party...closest thing is being roofied perhaps, but I don't think the intention of the song was coming from rape. ApplauseftAdele 4,730
How can you guys say it's just a party song? He has a good point. It could be a party song but you don't know that so don't be so confident it could really be either honestly

PartySick 161,538
I think it's just a plain ol' party song but if it makes you feel any better, I won't look at it the same way again 'Cause your interpretation does make a lot of sense tbh but that's coming from me, someone who interprets Sexxx Dreams as a song about overcoming obstacles and achieving your goals so that might not mean much to you You're stinky

There's a studio version without autotune too but I can't find it. Anyways, you can hear Gaga's inspiration for this version (even though it's her own song)
tiffa 169
I'm sorry people are on here being sassy. It's a really nice interpretation and it took a lot of thought. The great thing about music is that it's like art. It can be interpreted many ways and can mean something different to each person experiencing it. Personally, I think it's just a song about partying, having too much and still making the best of the situation. When you're drunk, you become disoriented and many people lose their phone and keys under the influence. Colby's part is just how men are at clubs. They're there to pick up women. Women like to party and dance. Men like to observe and hope to get laid.

He makes her feel like **** (can't sleep with a man who dims my shine) and she's blaming herself at first (lovin' me's like chewing on pearls), using drugs to cope (prom girl wipes her tears with silver lines), crying, and hiding behind a locked bedroom door while he's pounding on it and trying to get in. And she still wonders, at the end of the song, why every sexual encounter she has needs to have some element of violence because "that's what adults do." I'm probably looking way too deep into it, but this is always how I've interpreted it. It might be more about an abusive relationship in general rather than straight up rape, but I think the lyrics still hold up. Nope, that one is about Luc. She wants rough sex but instead, she got a rough relationship.
