Killa 17,490
She's completely obsessive. That's her most amazing feature. This is a trailer for LG5, the continuation of The Fame and ARTPOP. It's so obvious. Amazing video This woman is amazing. I can see all this wonderful people inspiring her and she becoming them. At this point i feel like she channels their emotions and projects it withou even noticing. She may have not been as weird as she often sells herself but she has become more and more mentally confused. There's something so fascinating about this woman. Now i feel like Diane's song with her might be really good. She's also a real mess of a person, and that is for the better.
Katie14 4,828
I find this a bit pretentious. "If i wasnt famous and had money to take care of myself i would be on drugs in a box somewhere". I dont know. I highly doubt that. Sometimes i feel like Gaga tries to make herself out to be this tortured, damaged person because this image feeds into the perception of the psychotic artist. Gaga, "brushes with darkness wont help you create your destiny of self". Just my view. I may very well be wrong.

Lesbireal she would probably open an artisan bakery or something and become one of those chicks that posts photos with inspirational captions on insta. She is incredibly fortunate to be in the position that she's in. She's surrounded by an invaluable support system composed of family, friends, collaborators and she has the monetary and status-given resources that provide her with access to things that some unknown struggling artist may not have. She has spoken of her history of addiction and her humble beginnings so I trust her conviction of where she believes she would be if she had never obtained her worldwide fame and success. I don't agree that she is trying to "make herself out to be" anything she is simply opening up to her truth and whether people feel she is being pretentious or phony well then that's on them. I don't agree that she is trying to "make herself out to be" anything she is simply opening up to her truth and whether people feel she is being pretentious or phony well then that's on them. I can't agree. In her 2010 Vanity Fair article she said "I prayed to God every day to install something crazy in me." She always had this immense desire to be this deep, dark, tortured figure and she likes to let everyone know about her "humble beginnings", like you said. And sure, performing with Starlight in bars is a humble creative beginning. But she never grew up with humble beginnings. She went to prestigious schools, her parents were upper middle class. She struggles with that identity, it's clear. She likes to romanticise who she is and were her artistry stems from. What she says in the video so dual. McQueen honestly came from humble beginnings but Daphne Guinness did not. She is an heiress, she comes from a very prestigious, rich beyond belief family, she's just known as this figure, this almost dream-like creature who goes to sleep in avant-garde couture pieces. And Gaga loves that, obviously, it's her lifelong dream to be seen like that, as she says in the video. But she's also always trying to be this dark, tormented poet-like figure, she inflicted her drug addiction onto herself. She said it in her interview with Amanda de Cadenet "I used to think taking drugs was cool and artistic." I believe she really (conscious or unconscious) did it to source inspiration for her music and career. It's almost con-artist-like how she'd look for things to inflict darkness upon herself. And as much as I enjoy seeing a happier Gaga, I feel like she's still struggling with that. Still does it. Not necessarily drugs but inflicting pain upon herself to source art. And the discussion that stems from that is, how authentic is the work that comes out of that? Sometimes she seems raw, honest, "there"... but sometimes she talks complete circles around herself and it becomes clear that she, above anything else, would just really, really like to be this tormented figure. Even if that's not the case.

I remember also in a Rolling Stones interview from 2010 she said, "All the trauma i experienced i caused to myself while being irresponsible". she felt like she needed to go through pain and trauma in order to emerge as an authentic and deep artist, to be able to understand different emotions and perspectives. I cant blame her for inflicting pain on herself because the idea of needing to be tortured to reach your creative potential may very well be true. I have some theories about why this is, but im not really sure.
Guest
I totally agree with jojuun and Katie. If you look at baby Stefani, she is kind of average, not to be rude. And I remember watching some interview or something where she talks about Bowies influence on her, and how she would only hang out with other artists and wanted to live her life like his. I think she has this idea of what an artist should be and I think she so badly wants to be this tormented, crazy artist with an unimaginable mind, an enigma. I don't know if she's really anything like that at all. I'm not saying she's not an artist and I'm not saying she's not talented or that her words are fake, but I think a lot of this was all self-inflicted. She created the persona Lady Gaga for whatever reason, but she's super... normal under it all. I don't know if that makes her less authentic. I do believe the clothing and the makeup and the weirdness she exudes and it's real, but like it was mentioned, she has this idea of what an artist is and wants to be that. I remember in the Oprah interview where she goes to a dark place before every album or whatever and her and her mom made it sound like a very scary place. I'm sure she's inflicting whatever upon herself intentionally, she really has few reasons to feel tormented otherwise. I don't think Gaga is the tormented artist she wants to be, but she brings it onto herself for the sake of art, if that makes sense. It's like a performance art. That's not to say she doesn't have darkness in her past, but she does want to be a character.

She feels that she couldn't live without her art, so if she wasn't successful enough to support herself, then she believes she would live in a box. It sounds extreme and let's be honest, her parents wouldn't let her live in a box, but that is how passionate she is about creating art. I know people who make this comment about making a living with their artistic pursuits. They feel like they have to have it to live. Some grow out of it, by getting regular jobs and doing their art as a hobby, but some end up having bad situations in their life due to not having the ability to put their art as a hobby. People are different, some really are this intent on following their passion no matter what.
