brendablethyn 536
Sam Smith’s victory over Lady Gaga and ever-the-bridesmaid Diane Warren for best original songstood out as well. You have to remember that the ballot only mentions song and film title, not performer or songwriter. Unless voters felt like “Fifty Shades of Gray” needed to be an Oscar winner, “Spectre” was obviously the most recognizable title on the list. Call me crazy but sometimes I think it’s as simple as that. (Though someone really should have let Smith know along the way that gentlemen like Elton John, Bill Condon and Dustin Lance Black came before him.) http://variety.com/2016/film/opinion/oscars-2016-analysis-surprises-tight-race-spotlight-1201718282/

llbcherry 591
Maybe they are a bunch of Sam Smith fans.. Maybe it's not about the quality of the song (WOTW), and it's just that they like Sam's music in general?
brendablethyn 536
They just saw the title of the film they recognized and ticked it. It's that simple.
OMonster 14,675
It really seems an injustice to Diane more than anything. How has such an acclaimed song-writer been nominated eight times, but never won the award? It doesn't seem right, really. She's obviously a very committed and talented woman - I think it's almost wrong for the Academy not to recognise this. I'd even argue Gaga's loss is an injustice to herself, too. After her iconic Oscar performance last year (which, arguably, brought the Oscars back to pop-cultural, mass relevance), it is disappointing that they wouldn't, in turn, make her a winner. I'm not saying that anyone who performs well on the show deserves an Oscar, not at all - but I do believe that Gaga's performance was more than just a 'good performance'. There isn't one major pop artist who could do what Gaga did that night; and not just vocally. subtext / fantasy

Benji 20,113
There's a number of reasons as to why Smith's song or anyone else's could have won. I said it a long time ago but I've never been a fan of the actual recording of TIHTY. The acoustic version is gorgeous and so are many of the performances but there's always been something off (to me) about the official release. If I was unaware of the awesome performances, I think I would not have chosen TIHTY to win. I totally think Gaga and Diane deserved to win but I can't write a post without acknowledging the fact that even I, a fan, dislikes something about the song. Especially vs a campus rape documentary that didn't have much promo. FSOG was heard of too, for how bad it was. Earned It winning would have been tragic.
