Respecting the human being behind the award and respecting the decision are two different things. Saying that people shouldn't call him names and that people should congratulate him are two different issues. You didn't present your argument in the right way...you were telling others what they should do...that has been the problem with your statement from the beginning.

C'mon, these two are two sides of the same coin, one with a positive (congratulate) and one with a negative (not calling names) vibe. Choose whatever you like.

Quit expecting the impossible and preaching at people for having normal reactions. You should have stopped at your "honest congratulations". That would have been fine. The fact that you went on to chastise others for not reacting like you is the problem.

No, they are not the same at all. You can disagree with the decision, disagree that it was a good song, disagree that the performance was a good one...you can even strongly dislike his voice at all times and still be respectful to the human being. People don't have to respect anything about this award, nor do they have to offer congratulations.

You go ahead and do that, but the insistance that everyone should do the same as you and that it shows some surperior maturity is simply off base.

He won an Oscar while all the haters are at home behind the keyboard eating Cheetos. His song was better. Deal with it.

Guys, y'áll are embarrassing as ****. We didn't like he won. But move on. I'm sure this opens more opportunities for Gaga to be asked to sing in films in the future.

I agree with you that people shouldn't be hateful towards him for winning the award over Gaga, but I disagree that everyone needs to give warm applause :emma: Personally I'm giving warm applause because I love the song and my opinion on Sam Smith is between neutral to good, but if people don't think he deserved it then they needn't clap for the win if they feel like another nominee was shunned. It'd be great if we could be like "yay :applause: " but it's not realistic especially when you fully disagree with something. It seems fair for people to be like " :crossed: ", it's when the anger causes the hurling of insults when it's gone too far and isn't okay anymore :ohno:

edit: My point is that if people don't want to clap then they don't have to, but they also don't have to (and shouldn't) go the extra mile by bashing and insulting Sam Smith

Congrats for what, though? Everyone agrees that it's the worst Bond song ever made.

The performance was lame and his speech was awful. He doesn't deserve congratulations, nor an Oscar.

You realize it isn't Sam's fault that he won, right? He didn't have some secret pact with the academy to take the award away from Gaga and Diane.

The title of this thread is completely dishonest. This user - who has been on my ignore list for who knows how long - doesn't speak for me or for a LOT of people on here, who believe very strongly that Lady Gaga and Diane Warren should have been on that stage accepting that award.

We're not obligated to congratulate anybody we don't want to. I don't hate Sam Smith, but he's not what this is about. This is about a genuinely good song about an extremely important topic getting shafted by an Academy that has time and again proven not to know what it is doing.

At least the rest of the posts on Page 1 make it obvious that OP is a lie.

Remember his posts in that gay adoption thread last year or so :green:
