Majority of Germans support gay marriage

"Angela Merkel may not be supporting gay marriage – but a majority of her voters are, a new poll shows.

Conducted by YouGov, a representative survey revealed 68% of Germans to support granting same-sex couples marriage equality, with 24% absolutely opposing the idea.

Offering an insight into participants’ political stance, the poll showed 87% of those voting for the Green Party to support gay marriage.

Since the introduction of civil partnerships in 2001, the party has been the driving force behind the discussion about marriage equality in Germany.

Of those voting either for the Social Democrats or the Left Party, 14% and 18% vetoed treating gay and straight couples the same; 79% showed their support.

The biggest surprise, though, comes in the form of supporters of Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union: 61% or participants who said they voted for the governing party also expressed their support for marriage equality.

‘The citizens are ready, Mrs Merkel: same marriage rights for homosexual couples,’ openly gay politician Volker Beck wrote on his Facebook page before echoing one of the Chancellor’s most famous sentiments, originally said in light of the current refugee crisis.

‘Two thirds of German say: We can do this! We want this!’

On 18 February, the Bundestag is set to have a first debate about opening marriage to all couples after the Green Party forced the government into debating the matter."

It's embarrassing how long Germany takes to legalize Gay marriage already :air:

I thought Germany was more liberal! I thought every major western power had legalised it.

I don't speak marital equality but I can if you like.  :applause:

This should be enough force for Merkel to really reconsider her stance on gay marriage.  Although what the public want and what she wants are two different things...

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it

I don't see this changing while she is in power. There have been so many calls from inside the government and endless petitions and she and others still refuse to introduce same sex marriage. It's such a shame.

You practically see trans, gay and lesbian couples and whatnot everywhere here, living freely and not being judged by others, so for all I care they can keep it. And this is in Dresden. :emma: I can only imagine how much better West should be though. Someone take me there please. :emma:
