Slate - Taylor is the new-millennium Madonna

Taylor is the musical equivalent of beige paint in my opinion. She's aggressively mediocre. Why she's being compared to Madonna is beyond me.

I love to see these girls and guys reach their 10 year anniversary mark of being big in the industry, so props to you Taylor, its quite an accomplishment. :applause:

We've lost so many who didn't accomplish this feat.

Madonna reinvented herself tremendously for each album. Taylor's reinvention has included cutting and straightening her hair and wearing crop tops. Wouldn't call that very Madonna-like.

Madonna challenged expectations of women in the industry regarding how they presented themselves. Maybe you could say Taylor is similar to that in the manner in which she conducts her career like a business, but I wouldn't say she's really pushing the envelope in any area.

Madonna was controversial. The most controversial thing about Taylor is the fact that she's not controversial and apparently that she switched from Country to Pop, which no one was really against anyways.

I just....it's one thing to praise Taylor - she's successful, she's smart, she does have talent - but to call her a new Madonna? It just doesn't work.

The only thing about Taylor that isn't mediocre is her success. Her writing can be duplicated by 75% of teenage girls, and her music is catchy but nothing about it is anything above commercial or crowd-pleasing. I've NEVER understood why so many critics are this far up her ass.

I'm not saying she's not talented, I'm just unable to understand how she stands out to so many people the way she does.

I see their point...even if she's not as daring as Madonna, she's a smart business woman and very competent when it comes to creating a package and crafting an image that "fits the moment"...at least with her two incursions in pop music she did very well.

ATTENTION: (bad) jokes and sarcasm are still a thing, so don't take everything I say literally. Thank you.

I've heard this comparison before. It reminds of when Britney was at her peak, people were constantly comparing her to Madge. It's bizarre to me, but other than massive success, all three are very very different artists who approach their careers the same way. Sure their fans may overlap, but you really can't compare the three of them to each other.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."
