Neither do people freedom of speech "to function" in civil society. Just ask Russia or China!

Last I checked, American society aspires to a different form of living than the Russians and Chinese.

And different than the British, Germans or French as well. That's how the United States came to be.

Are people really offended about people being happy that a Justice who has consistently worked against them is no longer among us? He's not just ANY person. He's a Supreme Court justice with a lifetime appointment as someone who ultimately decides the fate of the lives of any and all Americans.

People aren't happy that he's dead as a person. I doubt many people know how he is in his daily life. They're happy he's no longer a Justice and that someone better (more progressive) can be appointed.

Furthermore, all your defenses of him are hilariously wrong. Way to whitewash history to prove your points.

Just going to leave this here.

https://www.rawstory.com/2016/02/12-memorable-quotes-from-antonin-scalia/

My condolences to his family for the loss of a beloved family member, but nobody here should be sorry for the loss of this Justice.

It's about not celebrating a death of a father, grandfather, and husband.

Some of you are so f*cking disrespectful.

He might have disapproved of our lifestyles, but he still has an extremely large family of nice people that I grew up around and they are devastated.

What's worse is that the little bottom mods aren't going to give any of you warning points for mocking a dead man whose body is still warm. Class act.

People really shouldn't assume what the mods are or are not going to do. Majority of the time when people complain about others not getting warned they were actually wrong in their assumptions; this situation is no different.

Referring to us as "little bottom mods" and someone else as the "scum of the forum" is disrespectful too, btw.
Apparently you think it's fine to say rude things about someone if they're alive, but once they've died we all have to make nothing but positive comments?

Why do people think that someone dying means we should ignore all the bad stuff they did/stood for while alive?  He didn't respect us while he was alive so what's the point in respecting him just because he's dead now?  There isn't one; he did nothing to earn our respect so we have the right not respect him.

This is true. But we are also asking people be constructive. Saying "Good riddance!" comes off as nothing but rude, but pointing out why you don't respect someone or why you're not sad about his death is more constructive.

We are trying to strike a balance between being civil and respectful of someone's passing, but also allowing members the ability to express their negative opinions.

"If we cannot have moral feelings against homosexuality, can we have it against murder? Can we have it against other things?” - Antonin Scalia

There is no possible way to calculate the amount of blood this man has on his hands, the amount of suicides and hate crimes which trickled down from his dehumanizing language. He repeatedly compared gay men to murders, animal abusers, and child molesters.  He didn't just "disprove of our lifestyle," he wanted you imprisoned.

Do yourself a favor, this Valentines Day read Scalia's decent in Lawrence vs. Texas, and think about whether it's worthwhile to spend a single breath defending the life of a man who thought the love you have for your partner was no different then the love a pedophile has for the child he rapes.

As Voltaire say, "We owe respect to the living. To the dead we owe only truth."

Very valid reasons to not be upset over this man's passing. Not everyone here has to say RIP, we just ask that people be constructive, as in this post, when detailing why they are choosing not to be upset.

We can mourn someone while keeping in mind their mistakes and being critical of them. No one gets amnesty for a day just because they've passed. Peace to his family, but he deserves criticism.

Nice way of balancing a negative opinion of the judge and a message of sympathy to his family. :)

You don't think I'm critical of some of his views? Of course I am. Despite that, there is virtue in having class and respect, something that the gay community asks the straight community for all the time.

I love how some of the members on here demand respect for minority groups yet are this disrespectful. Have you ever wondering just for a second that people like that are the reason we're so hated?

It's trashy and embarrassing, and it's a shame more people aren't standing up to these members, especially those with authority on this forum.

You think people who don't say "RIP" over someone dying is the reason minority groups are hated?

No. Not at all. Oh, we're hated because we demand respect but are disrespectful? We demand equal rights because the people who criticize us are being disrespectful in that they've kept it from us for decades.
A group of people on a forum not being sympathetic over a man's passing is nowhere near as disrespectful as an entire government withholding freedoms from entire groups of people over internalized hatred for their sexual attraction.

Yes, people protest gay marriage, make fun of gay kids, and disown their gay children because the LGBT community is disrespectful yet asks the straight community for respect. Yeah, that's it. That's where the hate comes from.

For the sake of comparison, criminals you advocate to kill with your guns are also fathers, grandfathers, and husbands. ISIS terrorists are also fathers, grandfathers, and husbands. Everyone on this planet is a part of a family. I vividly remember you saying something that boils down to "kill them all" in a few threads. Why does Scalia warrant a different treatment? Is it only because you like him? That's a hypocritical philosophy.

While their families weep for them, victims of their crimes are not obliged to respect them in life or death.

Scalia was a criminal in terms of LGBT rights by consistently advocating to oppress them. In fact he's probably done more damage to LGBT people than any criminal in jail right now.

Even as a non-American, his actions have impacted me. His dissent for Obergefell and many other publications have been used to justify anti-LGBT legislation abroad.

Please stop waving your forced sympathy on anyone. It's transparent.

In any case I've said my part in that quoted paragraph. People have the right to be content that a lifetime appointed justice can be replaced when it impacts their lives so heavily. If he wanted respect, perhaps he should have respected others, and not tirelessly worked against them to make their lives a living hell.

His family has my sympathies though, as ironic as that sounds.

Are you seriously implying that the the Obergefell rulling and its ensuing controversy are not under close examination by the entire world? Because they are.

Even in Lebanon, several talk and radio shows hosted discussions regarding the ruling and Scalia's dissent was invoked many, many times in order to justify anti-LGBT ideologies.

Considering that's the only nitpick response you have, I'll simply assume we're done here.

I don't think anyone in this thread every suggested we erase his historically conservative views. I'll say it, he was a douche. That doesn't give any of you like queens the right to say "Oh, thank GOD he's dead. He deserved it!" :wtf: When you make comments like that, you stoop to their level and lose all credibility and respect from me. Rise above the chance to take a shot at a dead human being. Very few of y'all have any ability to read in the gray area. Its always black or white and that is utterly alarming.  I swear this website, and millennials in general, make me want to throw my head through a wall

Some reactions to his passing:

I was 21 years old in 1973. I wasn't political at all. One day I heard that the USA had "legalized abortion". I was literally shocked. I asked my father, "how can they do such a thing?" He explained how the Supreme Court did it. I firmly believe that it was not only a shock on earth but a shock in heaven. How many millions of children have been legally murdered since? Now, we lose the greatest champion of the 2nd amendment in our life time. He was the deciding vote on the Supreme Court that kept them from "ditching the freedom to carry arms" just like they ditched millions of helpless babies with the Roe Vs Wade decision. Obama will of course nominate a anti-second amendment justice for the Supreme Court. One that will "appear" to be somewhat sympathetic to the right to bear arms. Our stinking, foul, dirty, gutless RINO representatives in the Senate will exercise their gutlessness in approving the nomination. The new Supreme Court Justice will sit quietly until the opportune time and WHAM, out of the blue, our guns will be taken away. Half of the people I know who own guns think that our government wouldn't do such a thing. (Mostly the young kids who were educated by the socialist teachers in our public schools. The ones who have been told that their parents are nice but really stupid and the teachers really know best.) ....Anyway, you get my point. Thanks for letting me rant.

==========================

The best friend that the POTG ever had in any branch of government is lost to us.

I think it’s unlikely that anything will happen — or be allowed to happen — until after the election. If another hard-left justice is confirmed, our firearms freedoms will be lost forever. Period.

Does anyone still think that elections don’t matter?

=========================

This is not the black cloud everyone thinks it is. Sen Cruz will fillibuster ANY nomination, (Sen Rubio too) POTUS puts forth. It does however now make the Republican race more interesting as the next POTUS will have an immediate nominee and a true conservative should be able to galvanize strong support. Mean while the Democrat race will have to make a hard leftist stance for a Justice to appease the SJW, BLM crowd, further drawing attention to how far toward Communist/ Socialist they have become.

========================

Godspeed, and my condolences to his family. He was a good friend of the Constitution and 2A. This might also prompt the aged-Ginsberg to pack it in, giving Obama the opportunity to appoint two younger justices, which will change things dramatically for the country for years to come. Unfortunately with the Maryland Assault-weapons decision primed for SCOTUS review; depending upon the timing, it could overturn that decision, making assault-weapons bans constitutional….

========================

This is an enormous gift to the constitution hating statists. If the GOP blocks Obama’s nomination of what will surely be another ultra liberal justice, they will be painted as obstructionists in the election. If the GOP passes whoever Obama nominates then there go our rights.

I have a hard time understanding how one can be against abortion but support the right to bear arms hence killing people, a life is a life isn't it there arguments? I am pretty sure they are coherent and also against death penalty , am I right...LOL at the other comments though thanks for the good laugh!

You need to examine your logic... by that thinking people who are for abortion would also want to legalize murder.

The difference is that murder is done on a grown up autonomous human being while abortion is the choice of an autonomous human being regarding what to do with her body but then a fetus is not considered equal. That's usually the difference between pro choice and pro life logic. So one does not oppose the other. While death penalty and consider a fetus a real human that deserve to live does not really add up but oh well it's another debate I guess and we are well off topic anyway.
