For anyone curious, the influence of a Supreme Court Justice over the course of their average tenure has as much, if not more, policy influence as our President-- depending on the court decisions that come to the court during their time.

The intention behind their life term is to allow them to be impartial and unswayed by the threat of being tossed out of office for their decisions. They want them to not be swayed in the moment, or by power-politics. They are balanced by the Legislative and Executive branches of Government, and are intended to be the arbiters of the constitution that checks the powers of the other two. The President will select the next justice, and then Congress will approve them before they take office.

so i'm guessing the presidency just became a sweeter prize for the democrats with this but also this really helps republicans ramp up their fear tactics and get republicans to go the the polls in droves.

I see, it's interesting but they could be swayed by other things like money...? or other threats? Just saying. But it's an interesting way to do things I guess.

Is it possible? Yes. However, this branch of the government seems to be the purest of them. They may not agree with each other, but it is a VERY noble position in our government- and perhaps the one with the most integrity. They're like the greatest law scholars of entire ERAS in American culture. I do not recall any scandals in my lifetime. It would shake the foundations of America if bribes were found to have happened.

I don't think anyone is saying you need to give him respect. We're just discussing the enormity of the event itself. Progressives, me included, will see this as an opportunity to make new leaps in the Supreme Court and solidify the progress made so far.

Another controversial dissent paper he wrote included this chilling line:

“This Court has never held that the Constitution forbids the execution of a convicted defendant who has had a full and fair trial but is later able to convince a habeas court that he is ‘actually’ innocent.”

That's right. If a man is set to be executed and has a "full and fair trial" but later can convince of his innocence....it doesn't matter...kill him anyways.

 

Edit: I want to add, that the entire POINT of the supreme court is to have 9 legal minds mentally-fight-it-out about our greatest problems and conundrums. There will ALWAYS be a side you disagree with. There will always be a side I disagree with. They ALWAYS have two sides that disagree with each other. That's why there are 9 of them, to never have an even tie.

You can be a dissenting opinion & be on the other side without being hateful, and his statements were often times VERY much divisive & hateful!  Which is why I find it hard to say ANYTHING good about this man!!  If he were more like Chief Justice Roberts, then maybe I would think differently...
