ReidOne 12,427
Regarding live vs. lip sync... I always thought acts were "required" to lip sync, but Aguilera clearly sang live because she flubbed the words, right?
Bebe 17,106
I don't think it's about "topping" anyone. I do think there is an expectation that she will perform to the same standard as the artists who performed before her. As long as she doesn't mess up the lyrics, like Christina Aguilera, or try to be too fancy with it, like Christina Aguilera, she will do great. TimisaMonster 31,073
Did people expect Gaga to top Julie Andrews vocals for the Oscars tribute? But she did IMHO and I love Julie I wouldn't be surprised if she makes another memorable performance but idk if it can top Whitney or if she's trying to Stream my new single, 💜"Heartbeat"💜, on Spotify! ReidOne 12,427
RE: Gaga vs. Whitney... You just can't compare the two. WHITNEY HOUSTON: a vocalist who possessed one of the greatest vocal "tones" of any recording artist in history. At that time in her career, she could've shown up and sang the damn phone book and it would have been a #1 single. She could do no wrong at that time, and her tone and vocal power were a 100% perfect match for this song and venue. It was a moment in time. The "stars" aligned. LADY GAGA: a student of Whitney Houston's performance, with an INCREDIBLE talent all her own, but (like anyone who is not Whitney Houston), NOT Whitney Houston. To even aspire to Whitney's moment is setting yourself up for failure. But this is not to say Gaga can't SLAY the performance and make it her own. Gaga needs to show up, sing the song with all her passion and be Lady GAGA. As long as she does that, she'll blow them away. This could be her moment. But it is exactly that --- HER moment. To try and "exceed" or "match" anyone else would be a distraction from displaying her god-given unique talents. The only way her performance can have a shot at having the cultural impact of Whitney's is if she does the performance entirely as herself and forgets about critical response or living up to predecessors. More importantly, while Gaga is experiencing a career renaissance, it is not practical to think that her performance will be embraced with the same level of national adoration as Whitney Houston in her prime in 1991. The GP is here for Gaga, but it is not Whitney Houston in 1991.
ReidOne 12,427
Let's also not forget, Whitney's National Anthem performance was at the height of the US vs. Iraq Gulf War. So there was a significance that the song carried at that time that cannot be replicated. Yes, the US may currently be embroiled in the "war on terror" but nothing can compare to the Gulf War in US history. Simply because, the Gulf War was simultaneous to the arrival of 24 hour cable news (CNN). The US population was completely consumed in watching every second of the war on TV, all day long --- something that had never been possible in the world before. So Whitney's national anthem held a special significance in uniting the nation who felt incredibly "close" to the war in a way that they had never experienced. As I said, Whitney's performance was a "moment in time" ... something bigger than herself, or the Super Bowl.
JusKeepBreathin 19,311
Gaga is not a top. She is the Girl Under You. Buy G.U.Y. on iTunes. OT: hell no. Whitney is Whitney no one will ever sing it like that. There have been some poor performances of the national anthem. Xtina even forgot the words when she sang it. Whitney Houston lip synced the national anthem at the superbowl. But Gaga wont, she never does. Gaga will sing live. And that by itself makes her performance better than and more deserving of acclaim that Whitney Houstons. Not matter how poorly someone sings it they deserve more respect than someone that fakes it and lip syncs.

I mentioned to him that even though "most" lip sync, they don't all do it and Gaga has firmly put a stake in the ground as a live vocalist. So lip syncing on the world stage would be a HUGE challenge to that... BUT! I'm wondering if the decision to lip sync is driven more by the venue (and it's acoustics) than the artist themselves. Some stadiums simply cannot accommodate a televised live vocal (due to all the reverb, etc), whereas others can. I'm not familiar with the venue of SB 50, but it's just a thought... Point is, the venue may drive the decision. It may not be her call.

Do you think Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones...would lip sync? This idea that theyre required to lip sync is wrong. I don't know where you got that idea, but Im positive its not correct. A live rendition is absolutely the exception. Half times are the same, by my estimation. Though, there is definitely more variability there and it is MUCH harder to tell, given the staging and loud musical backing.
