Because she was far away from any hospitals she had to be airlifted. She was in shock to find out she was slapped with a $30,000 bill. Ontario health services and "OHIP" did not cover her expenses saying she was not an Ontario citizen. When she came into contact with Alberta health department they said her bills werent covered either because the incident happened outside Alberta. After getting public attention and sparking outrage the two jurisdictions agreed to split bill 50-50 and the mother did not have to pay the bill. The good news out of this is that Health Ministers from different Provinces are now getting together to discuss solutions and agreements on how future incidents to travelers can be handled and payed for so no Canadian is charged a fortune for medical care in their own Country In the mean time Canadians are still recomended to buy insurance when traveling between Provinces to avoid nasty surprises.
