They are both criticized. Why didn't anyone criticize Jay-Z when he did his deal? Because he is a man.

Because no.

Just as Rihanna isn't being critized on the level that Gaga was back then. Do you know that even at the start of the ARTPOP era, 2 years after the release of BTW, media was still writing 99cts next to Born This Way? Do you realise that EVERY media website, magazine, facebook page,... talked about that during weeks, and weeks, and weeks? That **** was bigger than the announcement of Rihanna's new single. lol.

Why? Because Gaga was on the top of the top and then add another top back then.

People, media,... don't care about Rihanna on the same level than Gaga (not talking about comercial success, you know, I am talking about them as influential people). That's why she is not being criticized as Gaga was.

And, they care even less about Jay, that's why probably you didn't see anyone criticizing him, because no one knew and no one cared.

I thought it was because no one knew about his album :duck: Which was it again?

Lol, It sold 538k its first week apart from the 900k Samsung gave away and it was nominated for 6 Grammy's.  Tom Ford was a great. So was Holy Grail. There was a buying audience.

Well, here you are implying Gaga is a bad album or that is not a good as its score. And I ARTPOP is actually a good album.

I dont think ARTPOP is terrible nor do I think its amazing. I think its tolerably mediocre. 61 was a decent score for it I think. I just lazily used it as an example to say that Rihanna is judged more harshly by people and critics because no one respects her. They only can manage to scrape some points for her when she makes unabashedly asinine radio syndicated Loud-esque singles because for her to make anything that does not sound blatantly shallow means shes trying to think when she has no brain. People do the same with Gaga often enough but theres miles more respect for her. Therefore to me to see a thread asking why rihanna isn't criticized is obviously kind of false.

I'm not super informed on this, but in general I'd say Rihanna has a "**** it, I'll do what I want," attitude, which makes her harder to target. She doesn't put a lot of her own hand in the music she releases, so to criticize her isn't to criticize an artist, it's criticizing a business model. When people, specifically the media, go on the attack they go for people who will react, people who are controversial to discuss.

Rihanna knows what she's about and everyone else knows what she's about - it's pretty clear and obvious, and I don't think many people would disagree. With Rih you're not gonna get some big discussion about her antics/habits/music/etc.

The bigger the star, the bigger the target.

Criticize all they want but Gaga's accomplished more in a shorter span of time.

Let's see who's still in business 20 years later

Rihanna is absolutely experiencing backlash right now, but not near the levels that Gaga has endured. It simply comes down to the fact that Rihanna's MUSIC has never achieved the levels of cultural penetration that Gaga has experienced. Take a look at the Google Trends data of the 2 artists... Even during the Chris Brown domestic violence episode, Rihanna did still not generate the same amount of interest that Gaga had with "Bad Romance"/TFM and 'Born This Way.'

Long story short, the higher you rise, the bigger the target you become for backlash. In Australia they call it the "tall poppy syndrome."

Disgusting post. You're describing her like she's not human or anything.

Which part of my post is disgustung? Where I say that Rihanna does not deserve to be stoned? Where I say that she is a mere puppet? Am I wrong in any way?

Rihanna is the cool best friend you've always wanted. Gaga is the oddball anti-hero you never knew you needed.

Yeah, it's probably not fair that Gaga gets so much criticism, but honestly, the industry is so manipulative and so dog-eat-dog that I'm not complaining when any artist gets a "pass" on something fairly trivial. All that negativity from the media can be draining, with all these trolls and assholes that make their living from trashing and gossiping about people that are just trying to follow their passion in life. I actually see what's going on with Rihanna quite positive. So many people thought the album wouldn't be completed because of such bumpy promotion and delays. But here it is, people seem to like it, and Ri seems happy with it. The train is back on the rails and it's a fairly smooth ride from here on out. That's a good thing. It's good for the artist, good for the fans, probably good for the label (considering the amount of moolah she will make from the tour).

As for Gaga and the 99 cent deal, I think that's glorious too. It's a fantastic album that was easily accessible to the masses. So many people said it had an impact on them and is in many ways one of her most relateable albums out there (topics about being comfortable in your own skin, embracing your individuality, bad relationships, embracing life, looking toward the future, rebellion, and a love note to the fans). I could care less about the millions it sold and more about the fact it was so readily accessible. Same with Miley, she put her art out there for free, she's clearly loving the material and having a blast! Her fans, who work their asses off to save to attend shows, now have a little extra pocket change.

Sure, I don't expect an artist to do this sort of thing all the time, but where others see a "gimmick", I see an opportunity to get the music out there. So no, I'm not mad at Ri, nor am I mad that she isn't getting criticized when Gaga has for similar things. The media are fickle assholes. I'd rather look at the silver lining of it all.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."

It's because some of us little monsters can be quite obnoxious and self-righteous. Some of us are so insecure, seeing our icon being torn down quickly sends us into a downward spiral, and this makes quite a show for spectators.
