Rihanna: 2010's Singles Artist No More?

In August of 2013, Billboard celebrated its 55th birthday and did so by making all-time lists. As part of these lists Billboard established the top singles artists of each decade. This was done by combining the successes of each artists' songs on the Hot 100.

And they are/were:

1960: The Beatles

1970's: The Bee Gees

1980's: Madonna

1990's: Mariah Carey

2000's: Usher

And up until that time...

2010's: Rihanna

(here's the source for that: http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/5557804/hot-100-55th-anniversary-top-100-songs-word-cloud-top-artists?utm_source=twitter )

When I was on Wikipedia today I saw the massive gap between her albums this decade and it hit me how much of a chunk of time has gone by without her having a top 3 song (its been 3 years, and seems like we may have to wait till R9 to get another one). What seemed clear to be Rihanna's decade, in relation to singles, now seems like something in the past.

Could Rihanna still take the W at the end of the decade, or is someone else taking over?

Examining the singles charts I've done so far, here are the artists that have had weeks in the Top 10 as a LEAD (lead collabs count) artist this decade (each song count as one week) up to right now. Obviously, top 10 weeks don't give the whole picture but they do give an idea of how an artist's singles are performing.

Katy: 153

Rihanna: 136

Taylor Swift: 112

Bruno Mars: 107

Justin Bieber: 81

Gaga: 71

Adele: 68

Kesha: 64

Nicki Minaj: 60

The Weeknd: 58

Drake: 54

Ariana: 52

P!nk: 51

Pitbull: 48

Justin Timberlake: 34

Ellie Goulding: 29

Britney: 17

JLo: 15

Beyonce: 8

Also, Bruno Mars is definitely at the top of this group, i just haven't done his yet.

So it seems like in 2016 the race for top singles artist of the decade is now between Katy, Rihanna, Taylor and Bruno. At the time of the printing Prism and 1989, hadn't come out yet so its possible either of them could have taken over. I'd guess its Katy Perry right now.

What do you guys think? Who will be the top singles artists at the end of the 2010's?

As if Work isn't already a hit. FFS went double platinum and BBHMM went platinum.

Umm, it still amazing that after 10 years of her career, she can still pull his and platinum album. Not everyone can have that kind of longevity and consistency.

I mean...Gaga has only had Born This Way and ARTPOP in this decade and she is top 5. That's pretty good considering those albums singles didn't touch TF/TFM single success.

I have confidence that LG5 (2016) and LG6 (2018/2019) will leave Gaga in the Top 3.

This will prob sound like I'm trying to make Gaga look worse, but I'm not lol. Just wanted to say that the majority of Bad Romance, and all of Telephone and Alejandro charted in this decade as well.

Bad Romance was released in October 2009. That takes off literally 10 major weeks of charting. So yeah....Telephone and Alejandro count.

But the majority of Gaga's Top Ten domination were Just Dance, Poker Face, LoveGame, Paparazzi, Starstruck (actually went Top Ten), and the beginning chunk of Bad Romance. That takes off 86 Top Ten weeks for Gaga.

If you add Bruno, Taylor, Nicki, and Katy's 2009 weeks, that would put Gaga just behind Katy a couple of weeks in 2ND place.

All I am saying is...with Q2 and Q3 now an open playing field for Gaga....she could easily add 60 weeks of Top Ten charting with four singles between February and August. That's 7 months where if timed properly she doesn't have anyone that is super tough to beat.

In that period of 7 months that's about 30 weeks. With a single every 6-9 weeks, she could easily achieve 60 weeks of Top Tens. That's an average of 15 weeks per single. (Applause stayed longer than that). Especially if she has a massive debut single and a second single that kicks off the summer, Gaga could be back around Katy's single success.

yea, Billboard's years are weird though. They like start the decade in mid-november of 2009, so i believe Bad romance lost 4 weeks of it charting time. But I'm sure Gaga will increase her number with the new decade. So she can reign supreme :applause:
