Linda Perry: Gaga didn't co-write TIHTY

Who gets credit is up to the writers themselves to decide. You only need to listen to Diane and Gaga's latest interview (the podcast) to hear that it was not just a matter of changing a few words or melodies. Gaga fought over the direction of the song, and they had intense discussions over different elements of the song. And if we're to believe Diane, Gaga actually changed the entire approach and meaning of the song, while respecting Diane's words and keeping the core the same.

It might not be in the words themselves like Linda is implying, but Gaga's vision had a big impact on the meaning of the lyrics and the song as whole. That's not a matter of production, that's a matter of songwriting (as "songwriting" implies more than just putting words on paper). Diane deemed this enough to give her main writing credits. That's a matter of personal judgement in the hands of the original songwriter - not that of outsiders that want to have something to say on social media.

I'm not saying that promotional needs weren't part of the equation, but I think we have enough information to say that Gaga had a big impact on the meaning of the song, and that Diane has the "technical" grounds to warrant Gaga a main contributor in songwriting.

I don't get the fuss about it. Even Gaga credits her producers when they change a word or two.

Well, the fuss (for me) is that Linda basically represents GGD when another artist changes a word or two and then gets credited (Bey esp.), yet now everyone is claiming Gaga actually does deserve to be credited as a co-writer as if they'd say the same if Katy was nominated for an Oscar because she changed one sentence.

It's kinda funny to see the majority in this thread fight their own opinion in non-Gaga related discussions.

But I bet if the song does win GaGa will invite Diane on stage to accept the award unlike other artists who just act like the song was their own

TIHTY is nothing special lyrically, but either way I don't care for opinion of this one hit wonder

Chech the songs she wrote. She wrote many hit songs for Christina and Pink. Its true that she only had one hit as a singer, but it remains impressive giving that she was an openly lesbian, even before Ellen came out. So, even she is not right here, lets not use stupid arguments agains her.

Oh well. The queen is still nominated and will most likely win. But thanks for your input, Linda :koons:

Actually if the song wins, both Gaga and Diane are considered winners.

Well, you're absolutely right. You could still say: yeah, but then Gaga doesn't deserve the main writing credit but this always happens when you have a star co-writing so that's no surprise either.

I don't agree with Linda, the only thing I found interesting is that Linda's (wrong and unnecessary) POV is usually chosen when another artist is involved. So everyone gunning down Linda in this thread is a comical to say the least.

I think the most important thing about Linda's statement is that she says that she chose to speak out because Gaga wasn't even supposed to sing this at first. That's her final explanation for what she says. I think she just wanted to remind everyone that Diane should be seen as the main creator and that the media and Gaga's fanbase (which she's responding to after all) are painting a misleading picture (that this award and all it entails, incl. the song is about Gaga and no one/nothing else).

Absolutely, if Diane was credited as the main writer I wouldn't have questioned it. I don't even think Linda is necessarily wrong when she credits Diane as the songwriter, I mean the song might have gone through some changes but they were changes made to the song that she very clearly wrote :laughga:

I also agree that people attacking Linda seems strange, I know that it's kinda bad timing and people are defensive but I don't think she really said anything that controversial. Diane wrote TIHTY, Gaga made some changes to the melody and such that where obviously seen as important, but as admitted by Gaga herself the song was already a finished product when she was given it.

Diane definitely deserves credit as the main creator, I've always seen it that way and I find it bizarre that some others have not honestly. I suppose a large part of it is to do with the fact that Gaga sings it, but oh well.

Messy situation to be honest, hopefully it's cleared up a little by Diane or Gaga.

That's probably it. Obviously the song wouldn't have been the same without Gaga and I'm sure Diane wouldn't have allowed the credit if she didn't feel it was deserved.

A good comparison is Beyoncé including I Was Here on 4, also written (completely this time) by Diane. Beyoncé's credited as the producer but not as a co-writer, probably because like you said the essence of the song's composition remained unchanged.

Edit: Still doesn't really clarify why Gaga's credited as the main writer though Bebe's right in saying that even if she was credited last, she still would've been nominated too so.. probably promo reasons then.

A lot of you fans have some growing up to do. This doesn't surprise me one bit, this kind of stuff happens all the time in the music industry; Diana had a great song, and she needed someone who is a mega star to sing it. Hopefully lady doesn't put herself in this position again.

The innocent woman who stands up for her fellow songwriter got what she wants, controversy and ruining Gaga's chance of winning

I don't think she was going to win?
