DietCoke 386
Some of you guys are so ****ed up. Stop using the "BET" excuse. "The BET Awards were established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year." Guess why minorities need their own separate award shows? Because in over 87 years of the Oscars, only 8 people of color have won best actor/best actress. In 87 years, 16 people of color have won best supporting actor/actress. In 87 years, 2 people of color (neither were Latino nor Asian) have won top screenwriting prizes. In 87 years, only 2 people of color have one best director (neither were Black). This industry is awarding White people at an extremely disproportionate rate, especially as of late. That's why it's a problem. You can't tell me that NO PERSON OF COLOR WAS A GOOD ENOUGH ACTOR/ACTRESS TO AT LEAST BE NOMINATED. The American population is expected to be 50% nonWhite in the next few decades, and at that rate of growth, you're telling me there is a chance NONE OF US P.O.C. deserve recognition from these awards? Unlikely. More importantly, to bring it back to Lupita Nyongo's message: roughly 50% of the children in this country belong to a minority. They are seeing mostly White people win one of the most prestigious awards in the acting/movie industry. You're saying to that 50% they have no place in the acting sphere. You're telling them they have no place in a lead role, or as a screenwriter, or as a director. And that is what's most ****ed up. http://www.buzzfeed.com/davidmack/oscars-so-white-visualized#.ne1DoWEaL http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2015/07/06/its-official-the-us-is-becoming-a-minority-majority-nation https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2015/cb15-tps16.html

Sure- people of color have BET as representation of black success in media, just like women have Hillary Clinton as a visual representation of women in government. But they are the exceptions. Exceptions can not be used to paint a picture of reality. Using BET to justify absence of diversity from other award ceremonies is like using Gaga to justify the lack of artistic integrity in other musicians nowadays; The exception does not make it much better. From a psychological standpoint, physical representation in child development is incredibly important to social growth and awareness of self. Part of this development involves seeing people you can relate to (usually physically) in a variety of roles; it allows you to more easily visualize yourselves in those roles too. When a black child grows up and sees only white people, or incredibly few people of color, in spaces of prestige they indirectly are being told "This space is not for you." Let's consider the fact that it took 11 years for a black person to win an Oscar and it was during an event where she was not permitted to sit at a table with her co-stars because of the hotel's strict "No blacks" policy; she was barely allowed to be at the award show at all. And that's what black people see. Even the people who represent greatness in their communities were treated like they were less of a person. How do you expect people growing up with that kind of imagery to see the world as a fair place for them? When you exclude people from your clubhouse they go make their own. People of color were excluded from these award shows long enough that they decided to make their own; BET. It's like excluding someone from the "Popular Kids'" table in the lunchroom. Sure- the less popular kids end up sitting at their own table, but does that make it okay that they were excluded in the first place? No. People at the popular table need to suck it up and pull up a few extra chairs. That doesn't mean they need to unfairly let someone take recognition for the sake of being PC; notice- I said 'pull up a few extra chairs,' not replace anyone - it means they need to open their minds and create a space for people who can, and will, prove how great they are if given the chance to have a seat at the table. Alien Tulip 12,428
On 1/14/2016 at 11:38 AM, Steve Nasty said: For those saying this is just a "race card" non-issue, and that there were probably no actors of color deserving of nominations this year: Even if that's true - it's still a testament to the racism deeply embedded in Hollywood, that continually casts white actors for every god damn role - even in the roles of minorities Open your eyes. So true I mean the fact that the writers of Straight Out Of Compton were nomiated and are white is just telling of the panel. I'm normally not the person to pull the race card but in this situation its clearly not only the oscars but Hollywood in general. There are a lot of talented black and asian actors/actresses with many good roles but get snubbed every year. The only minority group that has it a bit easier are latinos but even they get snubbed from time to time.

JackTheTripper 866
the real issue here is the casting and menagent who dont give a lot of actors from diverse ethnicity a chance to perform, people are recognized for their work not for thair color and ethnicity. If somebdy wants to make a real stament-lets say this and this person and movie is withheld from nomination, and not we should nominate more people of color purly that our audience in the room looks diverse-beacuse that would be the ACTUAL RACISM
