Whilst I may not agree with some of  your points it is very refreshing to see an actual intelligent debate/discussion rather than 'You're all racist'.

Yes, calling someone racist is not going to change anyone's thought process. Everyone has bias on race/gender/etc in their brain from being taught at a young age and it's important to try and change thinking. I'm white and can't talk on behalf of a racial minority but I think it's important to listen to them instead of throwing the "you are just using the race card, shut up!" approach. It makes everyone calmer and have discussion instead of yelling back and forth.

Thanks for your response though. ?

it's not the oscars' fault that there are no remarkable roles given for ethnic minorities. oscars have their pool of films that they choose their candidates from and if that pool ain't diverse, the oscars ain't gonna be diverse either.

so you can of course complain about the structural racism here (people of colour not getting big roles and people of color not making it big enough to direct big films) all you want but there's no reason the blame the oscars for it

32 African Americans have won at the Oscars in its entire history. That includes most of the categories (actor, supporting, editing, soundtrack, directors, etc.).

Theres only been one female director who has won.

And there has only been one African American female to win the role of best actress.

Do I think the academy voters are all racists? No. There might be one or two that are (cause there are still those people who exist!!!!!).

But I think the problem is that black movies are not taken as seriously as white movies. And sure, some years there may be less minorities than others... But overall it should be equal opportunity.

Its not only that black movies are not taken serious. Another problem is the majority of mainstream black movies are comedies, a genre that doesnt get so much attention from Oscar voters.

I dont want to think that there isnt probably any asian actor actress who ever won an Oscar.

I think some of you guys are forgetting that the "Oscars" voting committee consists of large names within the industry, it has been disclosed multiple times that this includes casting directors.

While it is Hollywood's fault that they are whitewashing movies; please remember that most of the AMPAS ARE part of Hollywood.

Spoiler

Just to add: of the 5,100+ active voters confirmed, 94% were Caucasian, 77% were male, and 54% were found to be over the age of 60. I don't know about you guys but there's no way that 94% of the "talented" people are white.

I don't think the Academy deliberately avoids nominating black actors. That's all I'm saying on this issue.

Mr Ricky

I just did a quick "Best movie of 2015" search. And honestly, every movie contains a white cast, besides Straight Outta Compton. So I see where the Oscars are coming from. :)

What my problem is... WHY IS AGE OF ADALINE NOT NOMINATED FOR ANYTHING?! THE MOVIE WAS PURE GOLD. FFS OSCARS. :wtf:

There were 305 eligible movies but the entire 20 nominations were white. Isn't that mind-boggling to say the least?

The talent > colour discourse is a terrible way of justifying this as Jennifer Lawrence (who's performance received mixed reviews critically) was nominated for the 4th year, while actors such as Idris Elba and Michael B Jordan in Beast of No Nation and Creed respectively (who both received acclaim for their performances) were heavily snubbed.

Jennifer just won another Golden Globe. I also think that you mistake the reviews for the movie with the reviews for her performance.

Yeah, now that I read my comment back I don't think Jennifer Lawrence was the correct example to use in this case. Though there are still lukewarm reviews about JLaw's acting in Joy.

Can people stop bringing out the race card when a black actor or actress isn't nominated?

Idris Elba in Beasts Of No Nation was good, but nowhere near as good as the rest of the nominees.
Michael B. Jordan was great in Creed, but once again, that film falls flat in comparison to the other nominees.
Will Smith? Focus was an awful film, Concussion was just OK.
Straight Outta Compton got a nomination for Best Original Screenplay which is great, it deserves it.

You can't expect the Academy to just nominate PoC due to it being politically correct...if an actor or film doesn't deserve it, it doesn't get it. Simple as.

If last year’s minority-free acting nominations led to the protest hashtag #OscarsSoWhite, this year’s all-white lineup is sure to trigger a fresh expression of outrage, #OscarsStillSoWhite.

Once again, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did not nominate any black actors to any of the 20 slots in the four acting categories.

I was surprised Micheal B. Jordan and Straight Outta Compton were snubbed.

No Will Smith, no Idris. Nada..

TBH Will Smith deserved to be nominated for Concussion, he was amazing. I saw SOC and it was a very good movie, but it was not Oscar worthy. I haven't seen Creed, but Michael B Jordan was very stale in one movie I've seen him in. I honestly didn't see a lot of good roles for black women this year. I think the problem is with Hollywood not the Oscars. I feel sorry for Will, he has had some of the most amazing rolls for black men and hasn't won a Golden Globe or an Oscar. "Ali" should have got him both. This year the best actor nominees is really difficult considering all the 5 and Will deserve to be nominated. I think that the category most difficult to predict this year.  I really think Will just needs to do a movie with Ridley Scott, Martin Scorsese or Alfonso Cuarón to win an Oscar, he has already proved himself to be an Oscar worthy actor and the Oscars love those directors.

Saying "Talent always wins" is racist. Sorry.

I don't see it at racist. Maybe he ( or she ) means by that that people who are nominated deserve this nomination because they're talented. Who talked about races in this sentence tho ?
