At least 10 people, most of them foreigners, have been killed in an explosion in a tourist area of Istanbul, Turkish officials say.

Turkish officials say a Syrian national carried out a suicide bomb attack in the Sultanahmet district, near the city's famous Blue Mosque.

Fifteen people were also wounded, the Istanbul governor's office said.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey was the "top target for all terrorist groups in the region".

His country, he added, was "fighting against all of them equally".

Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said most of the victims were foreign and that the suicide bomber was a Syrian born in 1988 who had been identified from body parts.

Two of the injured were in a serious condition, he added.

Eyewitness Murat Manaz told the BBC: "It was a suicide bomb. I went there and saw it and came back to the hotel. There was chaos. Everybody was running somewhere.

"Policemen did not see this coming. They were distressed but at the same time they were trying to evacuate the area because they said there was a possibility that a second bomb could go off."

The authorities are investigating the type of explosive used, the governor's office said.

I expected it tbh. Turkey took way too much syrian refugees without actually security checking them; most of them are poor, uneducated hence vulnerable to be manipulated by ISIS.

Intelligence agency caught 2 ISIS militants who wanted to bomb Nisantasi district of Istanbul during New Year's Eve Celebrations. I was expecting Turkey or Belgium next...

Do we know for sure the guy was being from ISIS? not that it would be a surprise though but I wonder if they claimed this attack as theirs?

That's where the suspects of the November 2015 Paris attacks were traced to.

They seems very cautious at a level that government is so scared. There is high risk and fear just like ISIS wants.

Well, Turkish Government declared it as if they were so sure and rest of the world's media follows it.

I did not really pay attention to details so I am not sure if government or police or intelligence agency reported connections of attackers to ISIS but I do not think that ISIS claimed it yet.

Well it would not be surprising if it's them, I guess it's still good to follow up what comes up next regarding more details and such but anyways, it's horrible! No one is safe anywhere...
