I should be happy for Gaga

These award shows are frustration machines because it's purely subjective, and there can only be one winner, so more people will be unsatisfied with the results than anything else. Nature of the beast.

I was thrilled for her. She wouldn't have been my choice (if you haven't watched Fargo, then you don't know what what kind of genius work Kirsten Dunst was doing), but do I feel like Gaga put every bit of her heart, soul, and creativity into the role? Do I think her work in (especially) the latter half of the season was worth of recognition? Again, yes.

The fact that the Star power of her name probably swayed voters doesn't bother me that much... they rewarded her for stepping outside her box and doing it competently.  And though I haven't seen the other actors work that got nominated, I doubt any of them were as brave and daring in going as far for their roles as Gaga did for hers.  She jumped into a role and took it places that many actresses are not willing to go to, especially for a first role.

In the end the important thing for me is that the award provided a measure of validation for Gaga which will encourage her to continue acting.  Of course, I think that is what a lot of pop fans are afraid of, because they want her doing music only.  It's probably why the OP feels she "didn't belong" there, because of the tendency of her existing fans to want to box her in as a pop star above all else.

It's obvious though that acting has always been important to Gaga from way back based on her history, and the fact that she was in the DRAMA dept of Tisch.  She loves music of course, but to assume that acting is a "side project" is just as much of an error as assuming that Jazz was a side project.

Gaga is multi-facetted and should be encouraged, not held back.
