I don't get why the tan look is so much more ridiculous and gimmicky than many of her others tbh.

I stan hard for the BTW era but I agree.

People give those pieces a free pass because that's when they started stanning, mostly. Also, a lot of the later fashion choices came with some random reasoning... the meat dress being the worst offender. I really don't buy into the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" commentary and how we're treated like scraps of meat etc.... she knew what reaction it would garner and that dress would always be a much bigger statement on it's own than any commentary she could give it after.

I said the tan look was one of the things she's done that seems gimmicky to me. There are a ton of gimmicky things she's done in BTW and ARTPOP. Like literally a ton. But as of lately, her performances ad image seem to be not so try-hard. The tan look was just ridicolous to me. But that's just my opinion.

Oh, absolutely!

Many people forget she already did something similar that year, this time without any explanation:

It was also clear to me that the "if we don't stand up to this prejudice, we're nothing but the flesh on our bones" (which is actually not as empowering as she could've made it - at first I thought she was gonna argue that we're all equal as sacks of meat and we shouldn't make stupid distinctions based on sexuality etc. - could've been a powerful statement, but probably a bit too challenging) was just something she slapped on it later.

But yeah, I agree, this is remembered as a grand statement while, really, you could just as easily see it as a gimmick (that worked).

Some people might interpret it as being racist, and when you look at it from a third-person's point of view, it kind of is. But I just personally don't like it, even if it was suppose to be an artistic statement.

I also can't imagine Gaga doing something like that now, the Gaga we know now and the Gaga then seem like two completely different people. I don't think she'd do that now.

Not that this is racist but back then white people did blackface which mimicks black people (back then black people you know, weren't on TV or couldn't) and made black people look foolish and animals basically.

Nah, for me it isn't that. It's more of a retrospective thing. I used to think that she had 100% control over everything she did. But when she started talking about her old management forcing her to do things and then looking back on many of the thing she wore/said, I'm starting to believe that some things were done for pure shock value and not for art or whatever. Go figure.

The Meat Dress is debateable because she did walk the red carpet with soldiers..

I'm referring more to the whole mysterious aura she had that she played very well. We all thought that was really Lady Gaga,we all thought she was this alien-like figure thing. Until we found out later on that she was struggling to keep that image up 24/7 and it was eating her alive. So sometimes I just question certain things she did.

It's because painting one's skin darker can resemble Black Face. It's one of those territories that should be tread upon very lightly as it's still a very sensitive subject and can easily backfire as there's connotations to take into concern.

But now it's considered racist even if somebody white dresses up for some famous black artist in those shows like "Your face sounds familiar" and I don't get it... Why can white people only dress up for white artists ? They are not making fun of anybody at these shows, it's more like paying a tribute

I don't think it has anything to do with racist connotations because here in Spain some people paint their faces black on January 6th to represent Balthazar in the Three Wise Men celebration rides and nobody complains about it, it's something normal to do.

I disagree just because, in my opinion, Gaga implied that Interscope's tight grip on her was AFTER she hit so hard with Bad Romance. As she said in 2014: "They start asking you: How are you gonna continue this success?" Then it's all about replicating your moves to replicate the same commercial success.

I think she was actually more free during The Fame than during Born This Way. I mean, you could tell simply because no one wanted to spend money on the Monster Ball and she nearly went broke because of spending her own money. But it was her vision and she wanted it, no matter what it cost her. That doesn't sound like a woman struggling to keep up her image, that sounds like a woman in full control of her output and it turned out to be a huge success (which, sadly, is probably why Interscope tightened the screw).

That's just how I see it, mostly because I think her ideas in her early days were far more conceptually sound than the more recent ones, which makes sense, because she had a lot more time to prepare.

I know you were talking to Didy when I chipped in, but my comment wasn't really about you, just a general observation. Just to clarify! 

Whilst I agree that she would have been "forced" to do some things... it's evident in her appearances post Troy split that she generally just dresses like this. I mean you could argue that it's for "art" but the whole ARTPOP era was basically her whole career's shtick applied to an entire era. It wasn't a sudden change in actions, fashion choices, artistic choices or any real form of revolution. When I say it wasn't revolutionary, I mean it on the basis that this wasn't new to Gaga, this is what she does.

I think the situation is really complicated when it comes to how she felt during The Fame / The Fame Monster. Whilst she says it was eating her up... she seemed to genuinely enjoy being mysterious and misguiding interviewers etc but it's confusing. Gaga remains what she always has been, a walking contradiction.
