I know that it may be different because some people want to better know the religion, but aren't the principles the same? Then they would be removing Christians from society. Seeka 12,372
I think this is a bad idea with even more horrible execution. Do we want to be separated even more from the general populace? This just seems like "oh hey we're going to put a lot of people in the same place and hope that they all don't get bombed or shot up or something horrible." It seems like this was put into place without thinking about the consequences and the thoughts this would put into people's heads. With the zealots and maybe semi-zealous and maybe some beneath that, they'll be thinking "Oh, this proves they're not normal. They need to be corralled together to think about their agendas BLAH BLAH BLAH HOMOPHABIC RANTS" while the LGBT populace will be thinking, consciously, they are safe, but there will be that subconscious paranoia. This will full nothing but paranoia on both sides and will probably lead to heterophobia in the LGBT populace. Also, k-12? I know we're discovering younger and younger, but I think including elementary school students is a little much. This idea was meant to mean well, but I cannot see this ending in a good way. I just see the headlines now "LGBT school plays to massive shoot-out. 132 dead, including shooters, 42 injured." Money needs to be spent on making current schools far more LGBT friendly. It also shelters people from real world in a sense Exactly, it didn't work with Jim crow laws and it won't work here. Separate but Equal never works, and these kids are going to be learning in an environment that is too kind, too accepting. People need some form of opposition to feel like they're fighting, its instinctual. They should focus on the schools that have issues, try to help other non-accepting students to be more accepting. Better said than done, but this is not the answer. How ridiculous. The point of all-Catholic, all-boys and all-girls schools is to help them learn better, get better educations, focus on what's important and not bullying/distractions. It also helps like-minded people build networks and grow off of one another instead of being dislocated and in hiding mixed within oppressive heterosexual schools. The suicide rate for these kids is so astronomical that your point about "needing opposition to feel like they're fighting" is so tone-deaf, clueless and misguided. Honestly, please leave the gay community we don't want you. OP: All gays schools will help foster leadership opportunities, networking and better education for gay excellence. As an oppressed marginal group (lets get real; life isn't GagaDaily dot com); they'll need all the help they can get. Gay youth should have the opportunity available to join schools like these if they so wish. No one's forcing them to go there but options should be available. Constantly getting jammed into oppressive, careless heterosexual bigot schools should not be the only choice for gay youth and their parents. I'm not saying that LGBTQ+ people need oppression and bigotry, I'm saying that, in general, all people need their ideas to be challenged. Also, on your point about all-catholic, all-boys, and all girls schools, Schools run to reserve a religion, or schools run based on your biological gender, are a lot different than those based on your Sexuality. Also, what does a sexuality or a gender have to do with making connections? And since you don't speak for our community, get off of your high horse. I can see your ass. I can see your ass. 1) Students who experience higher rates of bullying do poorer in school and have higher dropout rates. 2) LGBT students experience the most bullying out of all categories of individuals in modern day America. 3) LGBT students also exhibit the highest rates of both suicide attempts and suicide out of all teens (along with depression). These reasons alone show that sexuality OBVIOUSLY impacts schools just as much as religion or gender. I didn't misunderstand anything. The fact that you're in here whining about an option even being available is absurd and shows your bigoted bias. And if you're staring at my ass the least you could do is leave a tip. Sudarshana 581
There are just so many things that seem wrong about this concept. Imagine it's a good school, the best one in your neighborhood, and you have two kids about the same age and you want them both to go to that school, but by some cruel twist of fate one of them is straight. So they both take the exams and you receive a phone call from the school: “Sorry, Jamie actually scored better than Alex, but he answered the ‘Are you LGBT?’ question wrong, so good luck for him in a public school.” Being LGBT (or not LGBT) is not like being a wizard, it shouldn't give you any preferences. DrewStevens 5,249
Well I don't think this should happen everywhere but a school made just for kids who have experienced a high level of harassment at their schools doesn't sound bad to me. I think that should be the main goal with this. Of course promoting kindness and educating children is better but do you all really think that's going to be enough so kids don't drop school because some assholes are harassing them and the school is not doing anything about it? There are schools in certain towns where students are still being bullied by their skin color and no one does anything about it. It's going to take a long time until some LGBT students are not scared to go to school, specially in conservative states/towns. So I don't see what's wrong with "segregating" them for their safety and mental health. It's cool that many gay teens and children are willing to go to school like every other kid without fear of being harassed but think about trans children and teens. Not even gay people support them sometimes. In my opinion having a place where trans and queer students can study without having to deal with assholes all the time is a great idea. They deserve to have a good education and sadly public schools can't offer them that.
