Is Gaga the most talented modern artist?

Most talented mainstream pop artist.. Without a doubt. It becomes too foggy outside that realm. You can't really compare her to other types of artists.

Cold as ice cream, but still as sweet.

In mainstream, I believe so, it is her and Adele.

Everyone knows that both are talented even if they do not like their music.

The future's uncertain and the end is always near.

In pop music, sort of (I just don't think that "most talented" works, hard to define your parameters), but outside of it obviously not :rip:

@Mast

Can I just appreciate you for mentioning Snarky Puppy? I thought I was the only human in the world who knew and loved them. Awesome, man.

Why not though? The OP never specified pop artists only. They made a broad statement and the only limitation was that the artists had to be modern, which all the artists I listed are. Also, contemporary doesn't mean what you think it means. Contemporary isn't an antonym for indie, it just means something that is currently happening.

Anyhow, I can't at you calling Snarky Puppy, Erykah Badu, and Andre 3000, D'Angelo, and the likes "indie" when they've sold more records and won more Grammys than a lot of pop artists at the moment. 4 out of 5 of Erykah Badu's studio albums have gone top 4 on Billboard 200, plus one live album which also went top 5. That's a pretty big achievement for her genre. Andre 3000, while with OutKast, had 4 out of 5 albums in the top 3. 3 Of them were #2, and their last one went #1. Their soundtrack abum also went #2 on the Billboard 200. They also have 3 #1 singles, which is more than Gaga. Andre 3000 has consistently been placed under top 10 best rappers of all time, meaning he obviously excels at his craft.

Now, why do their achievements mean less because they're "indie" artists? Why should their artistry mean less?

What are you talking about? Erykah Badu produced all of her new mixtape by herself, with Zach Witness only co-producing Cel U Lar Device.

Yes, Grimes is "indie", but that doesn't disqualify her hard work and willingness to experiment. Grimes has shown a desire to break into mainstream before, most recently with Flesh Without Blood. She doesn't want it as bad as Gaga, and making ridiculous performances are not her style, but she pushes the boundaries of music itself much farther than Gaga does. She's one of very few popular shiver pop and witch house artists.

Music and artistry are not about who can shock the most amount of people, or who can put on the biggest show. Artistry at its simplest form is the most beautiful. Snarky Puppy alone, they're a billion light years ahead of Gaga in musicality, and they are very successful with it. They can create a show just as enthralling as Gaga's without any theatrics.

See:

Even more generic artists, such as FKA Twigs, who is trying to break into the pop scene, create much more intricate music, lyrics, and artistic videos than Gaga. FKA Twigs wrote, produced, and directed Glass & Patron:

It's worth to note that FKA Twigs also directed part of the M3LL155X short film, which was very well received and even compared to the legendary works of David Lynch.

Just because these people aren't mainstream doesn't mean that their artistry is less. If anything, it makes it easier for them to excel at their artistry, because unlike artists such as Gaga, they are not limited by the audience they would lose over it.

Having different ambitions doesn't make any of these artists less talented. Wanting to be a pop star is not better than just wanting to make music for a living, which is honestly more respectable than just wanting to be famous. Doing something you love for a living is admirable, and if fame happens to come with it, then cool.

Sorry but Badu's new mix tape is just bad. If that's the one you are citing as an example then she is not a good producer.

You could be right about everyone else. I haven't heard or seen their work.

You mean to tell the mixtape that is getting rave reviews left and right is bad? The one that Pitchfork gave an 8.1 to?The one that Spin gave an 8/10 to? Okay.
