She never said that though, that was just something her fans assumed. The only thing Gaga every said about the real housewives was that she wanted them in the video because that was her favorite TV show, and then she went on to say she thinks reality TV has taken over the media, but obviously she ahs no problem with that and she wasn't trying to make a statement about it. My point is that less is more, especially in music videos, and if we didn't have so many different things going on, the music video could have dedicated longer screen times to a few scenes, making it more memorable. The best scenes in the music video are only about 3 seconds long, and it's just super messy. Like, if you blink, you've already missed 5 different scenes.

I was impressed with what Gaga did, and I'd love to see her to more, but she isn't a spectacular director by any means.  The attention to detail Jonas has is just incredible, his coverage, his transitions and his general cinematography is just miles ahead.

I even have some really nerdy favourite moments:

Telephone

(4:44 after waiting more than four and a half minutes for Beyonce to arrive, Jonas reveals her using Gaga's hat.)
(4:21 transition using telephone 7.09 transition using skull)
(7.30 - 7.41 lips, the faces, the scraping of knives and forks, the eyes rolling back. Interesting death scene)

Those are just a couple of examples, but in this MV you see Jonas switch to "security cameras" within the prison, throw up subtitles and graphics and the way he shoots the choreography is top notch (coverage on legs, steps, upper body, full body, crotch). It's just amazing.

 

Paparazzi might even be a better music video technically tbh.

I mean honestly there is so much more to mention I'm not even close to doing it justice, you could write an essay on each of these videos, but honestly the attention to detail, the interesting shots and general cinematography are far superior. MTN and G.U.Y just cannot compare.

Just look at the scene where Gaga poisons her boyfriend alone. Look at how many shots are incorporated.

Gaga doesn't have that sort of shot coverage in the videos she directs, she doesn't have the attention to detail. She is nowhere near being as complex a director as the pros. I wouldn't expect her too, but I just couldn't help but but in cause Jonas is like a fave of mine.

OT: Of current pop stars yes, I believe Gaga is the most talented artist. Mostly as a performer.

i love your post so so so much. he telephone video has always been so rich in detail and from the night it premiered on E!, my personal favorite mannerism in the video is 4:31-4:34 when she's exiting the prison. the sound effects when she smirks and when she slides her feet and does that little tap number is so iconic and amazing. that has always stood out to me.

i agree about marry the night. though it is one of my favorite gaga videos ever (top 5), the cinematography is lacking. the only true parts of that music video that i love love love are the color palette, story line, artistic direction, dialogue, and sentiment. 

anyways, i quoted that specific portion of your post because i'm curious how they film that. does the director already know the angles and segments he wants to shoot and the exact order? do they tape the same thing from multiple angles at the same time and then splice the footage together after the video is done shooting? it seems like so much work when you recognize every small angle that is in a video like paparazzi or telephone.

also, what's your opinion on the alejandro video? what would you say about the direction on that video? is klein as talented as a director as he is a photographer?

Well generally most of those choices would be made in editing, the director will usually have some sort of storyboard kinda like this:

so that the Director of Photography (DOP) knows what sort of coverage s/he needs.

They would know that they need some extreme close ups of her lips and some closeups of the equipment and such. They might have a specific idea that they want a close up of the glass as it is lifted but also shoot it from mid range just to give them more options when editing it later.

If it's possible to shoot it with multiple cameras in different angles then that's definitely something they will do, it's very, very likely that multiple cameras were used in Paparazzi/Telephone and such. Some stuff like the extreme close ups will be shot later because they would basically need to stick a camera right in her grill, which would be pretty obvious  

They probably shot that poisoning scene with 3-4 cameras in different angles did multiple takes with multiple shots (long, medium, close up, extreme close up) and then once that was done they would have taken some close up shots of certain objects and actions and then spliced it all together in the editing room while figuring out what sequence of shots look best.


Steven Klein's major advantage, which he would have developed as a photographer, is his very unique and recognisable style. I think he actually a rather good director. I particularly love the choreography scene in Alejandro (4:10)

It's such a great dynamic (moving) shot. She seems to push the edges of the frame in the beginning and then the camera follows her in a very interesting way. It cuts to other shots and angles but always seems to linger without a cut for just the right amount of time.

Also, talking about Gaga/Klein, the commercial for Fame was brilliance. I think he definitely has a great talent as a director as he does a photographer!

 I feel like Gaga is the only current artist that someone can book and she will show up and actually sing live and give her all. Most artists have all of these other privileges backing them.  Black AND white. Gaga can sing, give her the floor!
