Vocalists aren't the only talent a musician should have because there are some amazing vocalists out there but are horrible performers which is why the audience doesn't applaud them because of their mediocre stage presence/medicore music. Gaga is great at visuals, performing, and songwriting too. Plus she has all the other talents Madonna doesn't.

Zedd gave her pre-made stems and all Gaga had to do was piece them together. Also, directing is a lot easier than it sounds. What the final product looks like the job of the producer and editors, not the director. The director simply has a vision, and the camera crew, producers, and editors are the ones that make it come to life. It's THEIR job to make things look good. Although visually G.U.Y. was a good video, thank the producers, it had faulty direction. To name the biggest flaw, there were too many ideas and concepts for one video, even one as long as the short film. Everything in it was super rushed because of this, and we would get scene cuts every 3 seconds, which is a horrible technique if you want to retain audience. The video would have been miles better if Gaga had just dropped a few concepts, like the ****ing real housewives. They had no business being there and they single-handedly made the music video look like a joke. First, it wasn't Zedd, it was Madeon who helped her a bit. But she still made most of it. Also, having many ideas in one video or the fact that Gaga wanted to have the real housewives in it does not make the video bad. If fact, she wanted to portray the vanity of pop culture by including them.

The only thing Gaga every said about the real housewives was that she wanted them in the video because that was her favorite TV show, and then she went on to say she thinks reality TV has taken over the media, but obviously she ahs no problem with that and she wasn't trying to make a statement about it. My point is that less is more, especially in music videos, and if we didn't have so many different things going on, the music video could have dedicated longer screen times to a few scenes, making it more memorable. The best scenes in the music video are only about 3 seconds long, and it's just super messy. Like, if you blink, you've already missed 5 different scenes. Her direction in Marry The Night and Guy is also far more complex than any of her directors have ever done on her music videos. I don't want to be that film student who acts like they know everything about film, but that's just not at all true. Jonas Akerlund, Francis Lawrence, Joseph Kahn >>>>>>>>>>> I was impressed with what Gaga did, and I'd love to see her to more, but she isn't a spectacular director by any means. The attention to detail Jonas has is just incredible, his coverage, his transitions and his general cinematography is just miles ahead. I even have some really nerdy favourite moments: Telephone (4:44 after waiting more than four and a half minutes for Beyonce to arrive, Jonas reveals her using Gaga's hat.) (4:21 transition using telephone 7.09 transition using skull) (7.30 - 7.41 lips, the faces, the scraping of knives and forks, the eyes rolling back. Interesting death scene) Those are just a couple of examples, but in this MV you see Jonas switch to "security cameras" within the prison, throw up subtitles and graphics and the way he shoots the choreography is top notch (coverage on legs, steps, upper body, full body, crotch). It's just amazing. Paparazzi might even be a better music video technically tbh. (0:00 The opening transition with interesting establishing shots as we get closer and deeper into the mansion until we arrive to the bedroom.) (1:45 Watching through the perspective of a paparazzo's camera) (2:00 The Vertigo reference as she falls off the balcony) (3:45 The cuts between Gaga and dead models) I mean honestly there is so much more to mention I'm not even close to doing it justice, you could write an essay on each of these videos, but honestly the attention to detail, the interesting shots and general cinematography are far superior. MTN and G.U.Y just cannot compare. Just look at the scene where Gaga poisons her boyfriend alone. Look at how many shots are incorporated. Close up of the ice, mid shot of gaga, close up of glass as the ice falls in, wide shot of boyfriend on couch, mid shot of Gaga, close up of lips, low side shot of Gaga pouring the drink, close up of drink pouring in, full shot of Gaga pouring the drink from the front, close up of ring with poison powder, close up of lips and teeth, full shot of Gaga putting the poison in, close up of powder falling into drink, full shot of Gaga, close up of lips, close up of glass getting picked up, mid shot of Gaga stirring, close up of spoon being lifted out of glass, high side shot of Gaga putting the spoon to her mouth, close up of spoon in mouth, mid shot of Gaga licking the spoon, close up of Gaga's face, full shot of Gaga's body, wide shot of boyfriend and Gaga, mid shot of Gaga, close up of Gaga, closeup of boyfriend taking glass, mid shot of both, closeup of boyfriend drinking, wide shot of boyfriend drinking, closeup of boyfriend's face, closeup of Gaga drinking tea, long shot of boyfriend, gaga and drink station, closeup of Gaga, closeup of boyfriend, mid shot of Gaga and boyfriend, closeup of boyfriend, mid shot of Gaga and boyfriend, closeup of Gaga and boyfriend's feet as glass and ice drops, close up of Gaga's smile, mid shot of Gaga next to body, closeup, mid shot, close up, wide shot, mid shot of them both, closeup of boyfriend and so on. Gaga doesn't have that sort of shot coverage in the videos she directs, she doesn't have the attention to detail. She is nowhere near being as complex a director as the pros. I wouldn't expect her too, but I just couldn't help but but in cause Jonas is like a fave of mine. OT: Of current pop stars yes, I believe Gaga is the most talented artist. Mostly as a performer. Well generally most of those choices would be made in editing, the director will usually have some sort of storyboard kinda like this: so that the Director of Photography (DOP) knows what sort of coverage s/he needs. They would know that they need some extreme close ups of her lips and some closeups of the equipment and such. They might have a specific idea that they want a close up of the glass as it is lifted but also shoot it from mid range just to give them more options when editing it later. If it's possible to shoot it with multiple cameras in different angles then that's definitely something they will do, it's very, very likely that multiple cameras were used in Paparazzi/Telephone and such. Some stuff like the extreme close ups will be shot later because they would basically need to stick a camera right in her grill, which would be pretty obvious They probably shot that poisoning scene with 3-4 cameras in different angles did multiple takes with multiple shots (long, medium, close up, extreme close up) and then once that was done they would have taken some close up shots of certain objects and actions and then spliced it all together in the editing room while figuring out what sequence of shots look best. Steven Klein's major advantage, which he would have developed as a photographer, is his very unique and recognisable style. I think he actually a rather good director. I particularly love the choreography scene in Alejandro (4:10) It's such a great dynamic (moving) shot. She seems to push the edges of the frame in the beginning and then the camera follows her in a very interesting way. It cuts to other shots and angles but always seems to linger without a cut for just the right amount of time. Also, talking about Gaga/Klein, the commercial for Fame was brilliance. I think he definitely has a great talent as a director as he does a photographer! (We are rather off-topic here now though, so it's probably best we either stop or move conversation elsewhere )

Sister 9,907
I feel like Gaga is the only current artist that someone can book and she will show up and actually sing live and give her all. Most artists have all of these other privileges backing them. Black AND white. Gaga can sing, give her the floor! The future's uncertain and the end is always near.
