Lmao.. Not a chance. Asylum and Coven run rings around it. Even the most gracious, objective, critic might consider this season a coin-flip with Freak Show for 3rd. And a lot of people in the know (people who actually watched AHS before Gaga's involvement) consider it a candidate for the weakest of the 5.

Jessica Lange was a towering presence. A lot of people don't think Gaga quite fills her shoes.

People here (who view things through the "Gaga bubble") have a hard time realizing that her work has been "middling" (albeit with flashes of greatness--not the use of the word "flashes").

It's good that a Gaga sycophant has a gig like the author of the article.

But, objectively, this season of AHS is no better than the 3rd best (and may even be the worst ever).

Sorry if I upset anybody with the newsflash, But, it is what it is.

The main issue with this season (and there are many issues) is that it doesn't have an identity. I thought Freak Show was pretty awful overall but at least that season was committed to it's gruesomeness and disturbing imagery. It sticks with you a lot more than a season like Hotel which just feels completely disconnected from any real sense of theme, atmosphere or tone.

The season did start off strong on the atmosphere front with the heavy use of post-punk and dark wave music, and the heavy doses of violent imagery and foreboding sense of danger and unknown, but all of that has completely fallen away in the latter half of the season and now it's just a complete mess with zero stakes, coherence, character consistency or even any interesting imagery or shots. Gaga's acting is really the only thing that hasn't gotten worse as the season has progressed, and that's only cause her acting started off poorly and then improved with practice. At this point the season would be better off as a full blown comedy.

Overall Asylum is the only genuinely good season of this show, but unfortunately this one is looking like it's going to be the least memorable when all's said and done, even if it doesn't quite reach the low points of Coven or Freak Show.

A great analysis. So many salient points (and well articulated).

If only all of the content at GGD was at this level of intellect, they might actually have something here.

Once again, great post. Bravo.

I haven't seen the other seasons of AHS, but I think even I can tell it's not the best lol

It is just as good as MH and Asylum who are fan favorites and had even lower ratings  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

Speaking as someone who has been following the show from the beginning, I've found Hotel to be quite enjoyable. Is it the best or most well-written season? No. I'm not sure if Asylum or Coven will ever be topped. However, I've found it quite entertaining. My other friends who are fans of the show have enjoyed it too. So far, the only people I've seen trashing the hell out of it are people on GGD.

There's a campiness that was there towards the beginning of the season that's fallen off a bit too. It's like these shows get so caught up in their storylines that they stop focusing so much on creating the aura of the show. It's noticeable in other TV series, although with other series it usually takes multiple seasons before the atmosphere of the show is totally overpowered by the serious aspects of the storyline.

That being said, I would still agree it's one of the Top 10 shows of 2015. I think most TV is annoying, overdone, and focused on "drama" with too many cringeworthy moments. (How to Get Away with Murder for example is a very fun show, but so extra and full of things we've seen done before, and that show is miles better than most of those family sitcoms that are aired)

AHS's best seasons are 1 & 2. Hotel is on par with Coven. Freakshow was a mess.

what??? The viewer ratings are doing bad, I admit, but critically it's a success. The critics adore this show. Every episode apart from 'The Ten Commandments Killer' received a fresh score from Rotten Tomatoes, even some were acclaimed and went above 85%, which is really good. The impression of 'mixed reviews' that was given by episode one was only temporary, other episodes proved that this season is doing just fine.

Check again how many tv shows have 90% ratings on rottentomatoes. Having ratings in the 60%s is actually bad for a tv show, even if technically it has a fresh score.  The tv critics arent so demanding as film or music critics. Metacritic would have been a better indicator of the show reception. Unfortunately, it doesnt seem to measure reviews per episode, but at an average of 60 and with your best review measurred at 75, I think the mixed reviews tag isnt debatable.
