When she never stopped talking about her music and whole act being art, about how she was the first pop singer who made everyting by herself... those are two exact quotes from her in 2008-2009. I mean did no one see One Sequin at a Time on YouTube. Lol if I remember the tag line it was something like Changing pop music one sequin at a time. I've always rolled my eyes when she went on and on about her "art". She had never been as little "artistic" than when she released ARTPOP imo, and the fans became even more pretentious and annoying with all that stuff. ARTPOP is definitely the moment she lost me as a hardcore fan because of her/the fans behaviour. Having a big ego or being really extra with your work or the way you present yourself doesn't equal pretension, it's all about affecting greater important, knowledge, depth, culture, and understanding than is actually possessed. A simple example of a pretentious comment would be stating that only people of a certain demographic listen to a certain artist, when in reality you couldn't possibly have the statistics to back that up. Gaga can be pretentious from time to time but at her core she isn't really, she's just super passionate and goes over the line much of the time, for better and for worse. The ARTPOP promotion and interviews are a great example of pretension because they presented the album/era/concept as having far more depth and complexity than it had. Or when she tweeted about Perez and then, when her fans started sending death threats his way, casually tweeted they shouldn't give him any attention. I don't see it necessarily as a bad thing, but I guess I got so used to her being modest in the interviews, constantly talking about other artists in a good way, being way above the shallowness of the industry, always inspiring positive energy in her fans. She's obviously as kind, smart and authentic as she used to be, but her interaction with the media became very odd. From Adele to Bowie to Madonna to Paul McCartney to Rihanna (and I love all of them), to whoever you name I've heard they say pretty pretentious ****, so don't try to single Gaga out...besides, I much rather the right dose of pretension (and even I think Gaga overdid it here and there) than that fake self-effacing-but-actually-fishing-for-compliments posture that a lot you confuse with humility (that's not being humble, that's being self-obsessed to the point that it's not enough hearing themselves say how awesome they are, they have to hear it from someone else)...
