giskardsb 12,565
"pretentious" as used by this fanbase is just another derogative with no meaning. People use it whenever they want to slam some part of Gaga's behavior. Ironically, people seem to want a strong, self assured, creative, pop star, as long as she doesn't talk like a strong, self assured, creative, pop star. Great artists believe in their work, often strive to accomplish more than they can, and often sound pretentious to the masses; Madonna and MJ certainly did, as well as many great artists in history. In my opinion if Gaga is sounding "pretentious" than it means she's pushing herself to new frontiers, and that is not a bad thing.

eifulien 2,969
Well, interestingly, I had a similar thought yesterday when I was watching Just Dance video and then whatched Applause video. Actually you can throw in Born This Way video as well and you will see the contrast between the videos of the lead singles. So yeah Gaga changed a lot in terms of style and she definitely upped her game in trying to do more with music, visuals, etc. This unfortunately, comes off as pretentious to many of you. I prefer to interpret it as her strive to do more, so she asks more from her audience. For example, Just Dance video features Akon. I hadn't even noticed it at the time, but now associating Gaga with him and the people she worked with during that period is just so strange now. I mean from recording leftovers of sessions for the Pussycat Dolls album and singing RedOne, Akon, Gaga to having concerts with Tony Bennett and performing at the Oscars. I mean JD is really fun and catchy. And the video was daring for the time. But it is pretty much plain, non-demanindg, just enjoyable. And then comes Applause video, with 50+ art references that very few people are able to recognise. I became a stan with ARTPOP era so to me Gaga is not pretentious. She is just aspiring to higher levels. She wants to convey a more meaningful message. And the price she has to pay is seeming a bit off-reality, perhaps. P.S. Following the logic of PretentiousGa we can call her earlier stages MassGa.

REALITY 76,705
I think her love for art and music may seem to come of pretentious. She's so infatuated with it, she might say things here and there that may seem suspicious, but I definitely don't think she's doing it consciously. nativenewyorker 1,190
When she started going on and on about birthing a new race, pop culture as religion, living halfway between fantasy and reality..etc hardly anyone knew what she was on about and no one really took the time to care. They just wanted the fearless, level-headed, pop performer they saw in TF and TFM back and she had progressed light years beyond that. Her career really consumed her and the constant pressure from some people around her always kept her in that space of how am I going to outdo myself and how can I reach a new height with my art. She just needed time to be a normal girl and not so wrapped up in her art to the point where she's trying to push it out. Shes much more in tune to how much people want to know about her art and how much she should just leave to be interpreted. Always preaching about how much of an artist you are gets old. Actions speak louder than words.
Jenniferella 2,774
She lost me the moment she needed to remind people she was "not another popstar girl". Okay girl, that's the kind of thing you have to let people tell about you, don't say it to yourself. ARTPOP was just what it was : a POP album. I've always rolled my eyes when she went on and on about her "art". She had never been as little "artistic" than when she released ARTPOP imo, and the fans became even more pretentious and annoying with all that stuff. ARTPOP is definitely the moment she lost me as a hardcore fan because of her/the fans behaviour. "I have been writing LG5 since I was 13"

I noticed this too, sometimes I cringe so hard when reading her magazine interviews even. Like when she talked about not being able to properly express herself to her fiance so she writes a song to communicate with him better. What is this, Glee? I can't with some of the things she says at times. Er... Writing songs or poetry to express thoughts or emotions to another is something that we as humanity have done for as long as we have had lingual communication. What are you talking about? I beg to differ. The great thing about Gaga is that she isn't the type to not be here for constructive criticism/analysis. She isn't thinned skin or weak to where whe wouldn't be able to take in what many fans think/say about her work ethic which is essentially what a pop star does when they're on stage/interviews/etc. it's ridiculous to think that as fans we cannot have an opinion about our fav's presentation to the public. Criticism isn't a bad thing but unfortanely it seems that people nowadays can't grasp that concept. And you're right, ARTPOP didn't flop. But the era didn't certainly turn out how she or her team envisioned it to be.
VenusBlackStar 1,301
If there's anything that makes me think that she's sounding pretentious, it's probably stuff from 2014 to now, but I can't really think of any examples that come to mind so I don't think it bothers me that much. I'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt and say it's the passion talking and people are just taking it as pretension because art and music can be difficult things to grasp every now and then. scorpion 409
I dont think its prententious as much as fed up. The world is full of sharks, and good acts generate as much hatred as evil ..... You have to survive. We aren't talking about just any segment of the music industry, we're talking about Pop. Absorb that for a moment... I am not voting Gaga the next humanitarian of our generation, I am however all for her the way she has defended her art and her livlihood. And I would have done it exactly the same way. Until you have worked the days, weeks , hours , months, years at the level she has, and enjoyed her level of success.... you don't get to judge her character. EDIT to add: even if it was pretentious.... so be it, the pop industry could use about 1,000 doses of reality.
